We don't sell your email to any third parties or anything like that. We are a legit Australian business and adhere to all regulations.

      • The popup doesn't say anything about $150 spend, just $10 off your first order. Very deceptive method to harvest email addresses.

        Lots of electricians on OzBargain?

        • +16

Ha, lots of friends who are Electricians yes… but don't get me started on certified vs DIY electrical work. I have a 2 year old house FULL of very shoddy electrical work done by a 'Certified Electrician' that I paid top dollar for that I'm still having to address over time. I could've done a better job with my eyes closed! Pity my builders didn't allow my certified friends to do the work… oh but then they'd miss out on the big profits, of course :(

It's unfortunate but just because a tradesperson is certified doesn't mean they actually do a good job. Pretty difficult to take someone to court AFTER you've been burnt to a crisp from their dodgy wiring.

        • +2

@SteveAndBelle: i think the previous owner of my rental place was an electrician.

Our agent approved electrican we had in to fix a couple points told us not to use one of the self-made jobs (duchess mirror lights plugged into a power point). We also have about 20 circuits (no Ethernet over power line for us!) and no smart meter (in Vic, we must be one of the only houses).

It also looks like the Second off peak controlled load timer was hand adjusted to run the second hot water system on peak. (That water system was plumbed out due to it "not working" after UE corrected the off peak timer)

We also have two hard wired timers in the house which we have no idea about what they control. The hand written circuit board notes suggest we have in slab heating somewhere too!

        • +3

@SteveAndBelle: same deal for me. Got heaps of lights which still work when the "lights" circuit is switched off. Dangerous if you are not aware that they aren't wired onto the lights circuit. Had an electrician come in to install 5 ceiling lights, and he informed me that none of them had been earthed. The original wiring must have been done by a certified electrician working for the builder.

Gotta love your mystery timers though :)
Maybe they control the lights on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or the Perth Bell Tower?

The models you refer to on eBay do not have SAA approval. They are not approved for use in Australia. You risk the safety of your family and your property buy buying items that are not approved.

Challenge those sellers to show us the approval certificate with THEIR company on it. You will find most will either not have it, or show you one with a Chinese factory on it.

Do your homework before and weigh up the cost benefit of trying to save a couple of dollars.

      • -5

All due respect rep…you need to make sure your price is competitive..thanks for posting ..we appreciate it.

        • +5

Again, you need to make sure you are comparing apples with apples. The eBay models are not certified for us in Australia. Should something go wrong with them your insurance will not cover you. You are risking your family's safety for the sake of a few dollars.

      • +1

but theres a text saying SAA approved certificate

        • -2

Ask for the certificate. Check that the name on it in a registered Australian Company. You will find they either don't have the certificate, or they will show you one with a Chinese factory on it that you cant verify.

          @GoLights:

You say that the eBay product is "not approved for use in Australia", but the SAA site would suggest otherwise. The FAQ on the site suggests that any product with SAA approval is approved for use in Australia. The fact that the company that sought approval has a blurred-out address, or may not be in Australia, wouldn't make any difference as far as I can tell.

You suggest that insurance would not cover accidents caused by this product. How do you know? On what basis do you make that claim?

After a bit of reading I can't find anything that suggests that the eBay SAA approval is any less valid than your own.

Oh - and the "few dollars" for which I am endangering my family actually turns out to be $11 (based on buying one).

Speaking of danger, the suggestion on your website that the product was $64 is the sort of thing that the ACCC two-price comparison advertising guidelines should apply to. You should have evidence that the product was $64, or remove this claim.

Appreciate your efforts, but there seems to be more exaggeration than value in your offer. It would be great if you could offer quality products at competitive prices. But this doesn't seem to be happening here. You've got a tough audience here, but I'm sure everyone will very much welcome genuine value in any future posts.

          Good luck!

      • +7

        SAA Approval number: 140971

      • +3

Notice how the certificate holder has been blurred out? That does not scream legitimacy.

It is irrelevant. Certified is certified. It DOES NOT MATTER if the approval is in the name of GoLights, Arlec, WhoFlungDung or whatever… if it's certified and marked in compliance with the standards, then it's approved.

Anyway, you never got it tested yourself. All you've done is get the manufacturer's SAA certificate and paid to have it reissued in your name - this also prevents people from identifying your supplier. The product that you sell is EXACTLY the same as the other products on the market of that design that have SAA.

What you've done is perfectly legitimate (and what our company does too) but don't play games with this "Ebay is not approved" bullshit.

That said, there are heaps on eBay that claim to be approved, yet are marked for CISPR22. That is not compliant or certified. It's illegal to offer non-compliant products and these eBay sellers are lucky that NSW Fair Trading, ERAC, ESV or one of the other government regulators doesn't bust their arses.

    • great deal! thanks for posting. one for the study - one for the kitchen :)

        • Aggression is such a serious word…let's say we use commonsense. The reps job is to sell but in the end the decision is with the consumer.

  • +1

While this seems to be a good idea, power points are a long term piece of equipment.

USB charging is a transitory technology, in 5 years wireless charging or something else will take over and you will have a home full of antique technology on full display.

Plus you can buy double adapters with USB that are moveable and replaceable.

    • Meh, I just paid $25 for new iPhone chargers. $25 for something that will probably be in use for another 5-8 years at least? Sounds fair to me.

    • Also.. as long as its installed, it'd be using a small amount of power. Long after its obselete

    • Fair point. I just bought a wireless charging mat for my phone.

    • Totally agree. I replaced powerpoints in my house a couple of years ago, and was tempted by the ones with USB. But then I figured, how much hassle is it really to plug in an adapter, of which I have many?
And as you said, will current-format USB ports really outlast the powerpoints? And will the amperage?
My other concern is, do the ports use power when not in use.

    • +2

Right now I'd probably sit it out for 12 months and see whether USB Type-C connectors look to become standard. I suspect they'll end up becoming the defacto soon enough for a number of reasons including them being more user friendly and backwards compatible with existing USB when coupled with an adapter. The race to create thinner and thinner computers, including tablets, might also push the standard along.

If you had installed USB power points back in the 90's though, you've probably got your moneys worth.

Personally if I was to bother with something like this, I wouldn't be installing them all throughout the house anyway. Maybe on a kitchen bench and near a bedside table, but I can't see a lot of use having them all over the place so replacing them, while a PITA, probably wouldn't be THAT expensive or time consuming.

      • +4

USB3+ or type C is what USB should of been from the start . Up to 100W and a connector that can go in either way .
I think it will take a long time before it's ubiquitous but will become the standard . Tablet takes forever to charge over current USB .
I had 2 Legand brand usb power points installed at a cost of almost $300 . Took the sparky about 10mins .I can see the attraction of DIY .

    • Does make things look a little neater though..

  • So after all this, I'm still undecided. Is this a good deal or not? How much are these at the local Middys?

    • Well it is a good price in comparison to other prices…the question you have to ask yourself, is it a bargain…I say no because there is a cheaper alternative.

  • +3

    What's the STANDBY power consumption?

Last time I checked Apple & Samsung chargers are nearly 0 watt, while my multi-port USB charger is 1 watt while standby.
For each 1 watt connected 24/7 will cost $2 per year. Might not sound much until you check how many of these devices you have around the house.

    • This is exactly what I was thinking, the more things you make it readily avaiable in the house. The more phantom power consumption it will be.

  • +1
  • +4

"Tested with every available brand and product"

    Lol. Doubt it!

  • +1

I bought one about 6 months ago from GoLighting. Cannot complain about the service, delivery and price (I paid more than this deal). We have 2 phones and 2 ipads being charged at the same time and it works great.
For anyone comparing this with ebay, just remember they are local, so any problem should be easier to sort out. they also are liable if there is any fault with the product. I would rather spend a few more dollars to go local, for piece of mind with this type of equipment.

  • +1

@GoLights why dont you make this a true Ozbargain and gice us free shipping for $50 over…… We want bargains not every day prices…

    • That is a fair enough request. If we see enough interest for such a promotion, we may look to run it, or something similar.

  • how easy to replace my old ones with this one? need to call electricians?

    • how easy to replace my old ones with this one? need to call electricians?

It is illegal for unlicensed people to perform work on powerpoints or any other fixed wiring in Australia. In fact, I understand it is technically illegal to unscrew them to paint underneath.

  • are the usb ports switch on and offable via the 2 switches? Or do they stay on all the time and perpetually step down the voltage?

    • are the usb ports switch on and offable via the 2 switches? Or do they stay on all the time and perpetually step down the voltage?

The switches are for the powerpoints. The USB are separate, but might be switched.

The GoLights product probably has small switches on the shutters for the USB, but they don't mention that in their webspage.

Even the worst of such devices will consume maybe 1W, so running 24/7 that is about $2.50 worth of power each year.

  • Shame they not clipsal to support the covers

  • Ah, no idea about these power points but buying approved electrical materials is a must. Has anyone heard about the dodgy electrical cable that originated in the country of consumer home industrial nice ethics (CHINE) and now has to be removed house by house due to fire risk. What's more, the company went into liquidation and Woolworths/Masters etc are down the gurgle $30 million or so in re-wiring charges: this figure actually sounds optimistic to me.
The other good point to elucidate is what is the standby current drain and are the USB sockets absolutely isolated from 240 VAC?

    • +1

Has anyone heard about the dodgy electrical cable that originated in the country of consumer home industrial nice ethics (CHINE) and now has to be removed house by house due to fire risk

Yep and that product was FULLY APPROVED AND CERTIFIED.

are the USB sockets absolutely isolated from 240 VAC?

By law they must be. That is what the certification is there to test for.

I wouldn't buy the same product off ebay if it's that cheap it could have a usb virus in it sending your usage data back to the greedy power companies.

My friend bought an IP68 breaker switch of ebay SAA approved for his new outdoor aircon and sure enough 3 months later the bill went up because of the virus issue.

    • +3

My friend bought an IP68 breaker switch of ebay SAA approved for his new outdoor aircon and sure enough 3 months later the bill went up because of the virus issue

SHIT - I got some gas bayonet wall sockets off eBay last year, and had them installed by an approved gas fitter. The idea was that we didn't need to use electric heaters. After plugging in our new 24mJ heater last winter we identified an almost identical virus problem had infected our gas meter.

      • That's nothing. I bought a Chinese battery for my laptop and now I can't open Facebook, Twitter, usa.gov, etc. - I just keep getting redirected to MaoIsTheBestChuckOutTheRest.com

  • I bought the same models off ebay with the approval number BS and am not happy. The outlets are rubbish. The right hand power point is hard to plug into. The seller said they were a bad batch and replaced. Then the right hand side usb flap wouldn't retract shut again, seller replaced again. Then installing, the rear terminals are too small for 4 cables. Also the rear housing is too large for a wall bracket which is the mounding method for most houses in Aus, so c clip has to be used and wall bracket cut out from inside wall. All said 5 faulty from 8 off ebay, I would wait for the next generation as I can't recommend this batch. I certainly wouldn't recommend installing onto a circuit without a safety switch/RCD in your home.
