  • thanks tightarse

Every build will expire roughly 60 days after it is posted. The last preview build will continue to function for roughly a month after our official launch date.

Its a preview. AN announcement. Belongs in forums as its always going to be free

    • Look at the revision EC. I had that in the OP then accidentally removed it when I re-jigged the title. Back in there now.

Its till something that was never made paid. Belongs in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/forum/30381

This is a beta software aimed at getting user feedback and fixing bugs.

The preview runs on OS X Yosemite, it's free to use, and it includes a tool for providing feedback to Microsoft.

This post just opens a window for other users to start posting beta versions of software and then referring back to this post so those posts dont get moved or deleted

  • Does this come with the "keylogger" that MS put on Windows 10 previews?

No, I don't think it's done to just to invade privacy, but I think it's something that people need to know before deciding to get this.

    • what ? any source for this ?

      • +3

They basically collect information if you are on Windows 10 Preview. It has been blown out of proportion IMO, but I think people should know about it at least. (Hence the quotation mark)

        • I doubt Microsoft would wanna steal my Facebook password. Or any of my passwords really.

@stingymonkey: I think it's something that people should know about, they collect information and people might not want to get the preview if they know about it.

@AznMitch: Yeah you did the right thing. Just being sarcastic for the tinfoil hats :)

  • So would it expire after 3 months after being installed?

  • What will happen after official release?

you computer will be reprogrammed to transform into a decepticon

Your mac turns into a real computer and starts running windows.

      • ??? My Macbook Pro runs Yosemite and Windows, natively and with a virtual machine …

  • I hope they have included the basic function of being able to export your outlook mail into a file - couldn't believe it wasn't included in the 2011 version

  • So it will only work until the official release… that's like what? 3~4 months?

  • Anyone having issues with downloading it? My internet is working fine, downloads 2.1mb each time and then stops working.

This should be a deal IMHO even if preview is meant to be free.
It will NOT always be free because previews are based on time limits (60 days or so).
MS office is a commercial product so can't be classified as FREE software.

Excel or Word files you create using this preview release will be no different to the files you create in retail version although there may be additional functionality in final version.
You should be able to save and edit files.

For this reason I believe its a good deal for home users waiting for Mac update of MS Office since 2011.

    • Whilst MS Office is a commercial product, MS 2016 is a preview build, likely to have bugs and cause more headaches for everyday use.

I think it's worthwhile mentioning that because I wouldn't use it for everyday use.

Btw, Tightarse's previous announcement for Windows 10 was put into the forum (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/180304) this should too.

      • If site rules say so then it should be moved. This is definitely not a production version.

My view is that files created with this version can be saved in latest office format offering more choice in terms of functions compared to previous version.

Thank you for your report for FREE: MS Office 2016 for MAC Preview Release with Updates (until Official Release) (Deal Post)

The outcome of the review for this content is: Other - see message below.

        Message:
We have updated the deal with more information, after discussion we found that beta deals have been posted in the past. A beta is a free version of something that will be paid, even if it's for a limited time and the community seem to vote accordingly. We can like it to a free app that is free on release for a month but will be paid in the future, even though this has a limited time it will work, so perhaps more like a 'free trial deal' where you can use something for a limited amount of time before it stops working unless you pay (like origin trial deals for example). Basically it's not something that is 'always free'. See search results for example: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/free+beta?s=r&t=b If you disagree or have any suggestions feel free to let us know. Thanks

Well, lets face it Microsoft usually release their products so that their retail customers end up being the final Beta testers anyways! ;-)

About time MS updated the office suite for OSX. The current one is from 2011 and needs serious work in some areas. Anyone tried using Excel? Its dog slow with big spreadsheets.

    • My life at the moment, open Mac Excel file, wait 10 mins for it to open - copy a single row, rainbow of death for 10 mins, repeat. Granted, the files are 100's of MBs, but Windows Excel works fine with the same files.

      • Can you try downloading this new version and try with those big file to see if there is a performance improve? :)

        • I'm trying desperately, but OzBargain seems to be creating a DoS attack on the Office Download CDN. :)

        • Massive Performance improvement btw. Not quite Windows Office good, but a huge step in the right direction.

        • @mooribbit: thanks for the follow up, appreciate it :)

    • This. Pretty sure it's Microsoft's mission statement to make bad software for Apple devices. Have you used OneDrive? My god, it's bad.

      • I use OneDrive on both my Macs and have never had any issues.

        • Never had issues, but take a look at the memory usage.. plus you can't do some of the basics that dropbox can do, like version control and sharing a public link.

        • @massafiri: If you have decent Mac then you don't notice the resources it's using. It has unlimited storage now so I ise it for photos. Still use Dropbox for documents and everyday files as I agree it's better. OneDrive is a work in progress though and those features are in the pipeline.

  • woo, been waiting for this.
