It's all fun and games until your PVR doesn't wake to record Neighbours and your missus cuts off your dangly bits…
(hint: Home Theatre gear is meant to sit in Standby, when not in use, for a very good reason)

    • just be sure to plant a piece of grass to make up for your standby emissions

    • I think some speakers and amplifiers may disagree, especially when people leave them switched on!

Not really, in fact most electronic gear these days will quickly die if not left with a standby charge running through it. It's certainly not good for most modern power supplies, they're designed to live longer with a trickle current, without it the caps dry out and boof! In standby the current drawn by 95% of modern equipment is so negligible as to barely be worth mentioning.

What does draw power, in reasonably substantial quantities which can easily be avoided, is the little power packs that charge everything these days. Some are good, they only draw current when charging, however many, too many, are not.

        • Where do you get this info bazzaa?
Are suggesting electrolytics are not as robust these days?

        • @King Tightarse: My background is electrical engineering and no, that's not even remotely implied.

        • @bazzaa:
Surely "caps dry out and boof" would imply bad electrolytics in the power supply? Yes/no/something else?
          Please elaborate. Genuinely interested.

        • @King Tightarse: It's just possible that I was simplifying things for brevity and mass consumption. If you'd like to hop onto one of the many technical forums out there, you may find people with time to kill who are happy to educate further (AV Forums or DTV Forum spring to mind as a good start).

          @bazzaa:
What a shame, a "smart" answer. It was a sincere question.
So time to answer here, but can't summarise or explain any further eh?
          Right.

  • i have one of those power strips that do the same thing… which is got for free.

    • Which works for 2 days before the magic dies. Twice it has happened, first the freebie and then the warranty replacement.

      • Thats terrible. Have 2, neither has given up on me yet.

These were free for years, government initiative. They are total crap, we threw ours in the bin. Sitting there watching a movie and the tv turns off because it goes too long. What's the point in having it to 'save power' if you need to settings to be so high? Have to hit the power button three times to turn the TV on = pain in the ass.

I would have rather the money be spend on a new couch for the PM or at least something that would get some use.

For $10? total waste of money.

Yes guvvie programs like this just completely prove in a physical sense how out of touch with reality officials are. Scary that nuff nuffs retardos like that have access to serious-money budgets and scarier still that senior nuffies approve them.
My local door to door backpackers enjoyed every cent of the rort.
Oh and the power strips were comedy junk and went straight to the bin.

I'd like yours if you don't want them! I've been using them for a few years, great products
It's very simple to set 1, 2, 3 or 8 hours, mine also flash before switch off
It's very easy and will shut down if no one use rc for certain time

  • how much power does this device use I wonder?
