T-Mobile USA Prepaid SIM Cards No Longer Available in Unlimited SIMS - Effective Immediately!

Hello OzBargain,

Thought we would share a bit of information on the T-Mobile Prepaid USA SIM Cards (this unfortunately isn't good news). As of a few hours ago, T-Mobile has put an abrupt stop to two things immediately:

  1. The Unlimited Data plan is no longer available to anyone, and
  2. All plans do not allow tethering anymore.

See: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-monthly-plans
The RRP of each plan still available has drop by $10USD.

And the 4G speeds on all plans are capped at 8Mbps (a respectable speed still).

What this means for anyone who has bought in advance (whether it be from us or from anyone else), is that all unlimited plans will be at 5GB for 4G speeds, then slow down to 2G for unlimited data after the initial 5GB at 4G speeds. And no tethering will be possible.

Recently there has been a couple of scam web sites that have appeared for these products - taking payment then disappearing - including one on Ozb (re: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/180316). If anyone is selling this out dated deal we would suggest to proceed with caution. It is likely false advertising or a scam (scam more so if the site is very new and offering this at ridiculously low prices).

Lastly, especially for customers who have recently bought of us, we are offering to refund the difference between the price of the Unlimited and the 5GB sim card. If this is you, feel free to drop us an email and we will take care of it!

  • op can you post the email address here? I think i have been affected by this :(

I'm currently in the US, using a TravelSIMS 5GB Plan and just ran a Speedtest.

OnePlus (International Version) on LTE 11.49 Down, 5.52 Up
OnePlus (Chinese Version) on HSPDA 4.82 Down, 1.57 Up

Doesn't look like the 8Mbps cap is on…yet. Will continue to monitor.

By the way, I can't stress how important it is to use a phone that utilizes T-Mobile's LTE frequencies. The Chinese version sometimes falls back to T-Mobile's EDGE network while the International version stays on LTE. EDGE is very slow.

It's pretty annoying of T Mobile to do this to go from unlimited to 5GB with only a $3 refund. I'm travelling for the full 30 days in the USA and would need unlimited. Pity it's in the USA, they'd never get away with a retrospective change like this in Aus where we actually have good consumer laws.

I thought Kogan Mobile/Telstra Wholesale did exactly this?

      • Did anyone affected challenge them?

  • Unfortunately, this is not correct. If you click "compare our prepaid plans" in your link the unlimited option is still available. From what I could see it's still part of the "Simple Choice Prepaids", and is still available to consumer. Also from the website, those prepaid options also allow tethering. In addition, this article 'http://www.whistleout.com/CellPhones/News/t-mobile-offering-bonus-unlimited-lte-data-to-selected-customers' also states that the said plans are still available to consumers.
