Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for PC won't sync SOLVED

Hiya OZB

Recently bought 2 Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for PC as part of Microsoft cashback deal. Unfortunately, I can't even get the controller to connect with the receiver. I'm running Windows 8.1. I found some threads online where people encountered this same issue (controller comes up as unrecognised device, so I forced install of xbox wireless driver, then it comes up with an exclamation mark and code 10 in device manager. Wireless receiver seems to be working fine, but all controller will do is blink its 4 lights around the live button in vain).

Can anyone help? please

Edit: It seems all I needed to do was push another button that lies next to the port on the controller to sync. Thank you so much GoldPhoenix0!

  • I can't comment on the wireless controller, but this is what i'd do.

    1. Unplug the reciever (and uninstall all related software)
    2. Use usbdeview to remove the driver
    3. Restart the machine
    4. Make sure you're connected to the internet
    5. Plug in the reciever
    6. wait
    7. start device manager and see if it's recognised
    • I used USB oblivion to remove all usb drivers and reinstalled. I installed the windows 7 drivers from microsoft website under compatibility mode for windows 7 (i am running 8.1), running as admin. so the drivers are in my computer. the computer recognises the receiver and automatically installs the driver for it, but the controller remains as an unknown device

  • Probably using the wrong driver.

I think there are multiple versions of the wireless receiver hardware (official & third party).

I got an official one and it autodetected my driver.

A friend got a 3rd party one and he needs to reinstall it every time he boots Windows (device icon exclamation mark).

    • i have the official one (i think), from a computer store. the receiver is fine, it's the controller that's not being recognised. are you running windows 8? did you install the software before connecting the receiver and the controller, or did you do it without?
how does your friend fix the exclamation mark?

      • Win 7.

I connected the receiver, Windows detected it. Didn't need to install anything.
        I turned on the controller.
Hold the sync button on the receiver until it blinks or something.
Then hold the sync button on the controller - the lights on the xbox button should cycle and then rest on the controller number.

NOTE: Make sure your XBOX (if you have) is unplugged from power, because you'll probably turn on and sync with that.

  • This worked a treat for me:

    Right click on Computer
    Go to Properties
    Click on Device Manager
Right click on the Unidentified Device
    Go to Properties
    Go to the Drive tab
    Click on Update Driver…
Browse my computer for driver software
Pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
"Microsoft Common Controller for Window Class. Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]"
    Update Driver Warning
    Click Yes

    Hope it helps : )

    • are you saying i need to use the receiver driver for the controller? the receiver is recognised fine, it's just the controller that's giving me a code 10 error.

after u updated the driver, did you need to reinstall, or did it work straightaway?

the other thing is, i dont see "microsoft common controller for windows class", i see "xbox peripherals" or something, then I see the two drivers (one is from 2008, the other 2014).

  • still have exclamation mark on controller after installing controller driver, and all controller does is flash its 4 little lights until it goes to sleep mode :(

    • Have you tried using it on other PC or talking to the MS support?

      • I'm pretty sure it's just my computer that's the cause of the issues, but good idea, I'll try on my old lappy. I've searched all the forums with the same problem as mine, but none of the solutions work for me

        • Hmmm, sometimes it can simply be a hardware problem that you cannot fix without the manufacturer doing things.

    • You shouldn't need to install a controller driver. Microsoft hardware drivers will be preinstalled with Windows if the hardware was released before the OS came out, otherwise should be in service packs/updates.

      • I wonder if the driver package I installed screwed with the existing drivers

        • Uninstall your controller driver and your receiver driver and restart.
If you definitely have microsoft hardware it should detect the hardware fine.
Also make sure your Windows is updated.

If the drivers don't detect (possibly Win 8 not liking legacy hardware), you'll have to dig around on the net for the correct drivers.

        • @daalinz: It detects both the receiver and the controller, but the controller as an unknown device, then it gives me a code 10 if I force install the controller driver.

  • I know I had issues with a wireless receiver which was having the unrecognised device and code 10 issues and it ended up being the receiver itself. It was one bought from ebay (a fake one) and decided to just get the official one instead with a controller, then had no issues.

But just from looking at the above, I don't want to sound rude or anything, but did you definitely sync the controllers up to the receiver? I can't see anything mentioned above that you had synced the devices (by holding the sync button on the receiver until it is flashing, and on the controller where the lights should flash clockwise).

Just thought I would mention this just in case this was the issue?

    • I hold the button on the receiver til it starts flashing, then press the live button on the controller so it flashes too. They both flash. Eventually, the receiver stops flashing, and 5 mins after that, the controller stops flashing and turns off. Am I doing it right?

      • +1

Once the controller is turned on, there is a sync button on the top (slightly to the left) which you need to hold for it to start syncing. Then you just need to hold the button on the receiver until the receiver light is flashing, and the controller light is rotating clockwise.

Simply follow this video but replace the console with the receiver and see how that goes? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rxk4qXwJ0U

        • I am an idiot. Thank you for educating me! Had no idea there was a button on top of the controller!
