Sri Lankan Airways to Tentatively Commence Direct Flights between Melbourne and Colombo

Hi guys,

Thought you may like to know a new service which is set to commence for Melbourne.

According to airlineroute.net - which has access to the global airline scheduling systems - a new direct service between Colombo, Sri Lanka and Melbourne, Australia by Sri Lankan airways is set for commencement as of November 2nd 2015.

This would be the second direct service to the sub-continent region, after the Air India flights commenced last year between Australia and New Delhi.

Suspect they may have sale fares when (if) the plans follow through, and from Colombo there are flights to Europe. Watch this space.

    Sounds promising although I suspect it may only be viable long term if they offer decent connections to Europe, India and the Middle East as well. Plenty of Aussies visiting Sri Lanka yes, but already there are plenty of cheap flights via SE Asia with a fairly short connection time.

      I think the were probably spurred on by the Air India commencement last year. Especially seeing the business links Melbourne has with Sri Lanka and also the number of the Sri Lankan community residing in Melbourne - could be most benefitial for Sri Lankans visiting home i guess.

    I, for one, would welcome these flights! More competition is always better. And IIRC Colombo has great connections to everywhere in the subcontinent. Good move… Makes me wonder why these flights were cancelled in the first place…

    knowing sri lanka Airline culture not sure who bribed who, to stop direct flights to Australia from sri lanka, all of Us are suffering because of this specially Elderly and students , paying unnecessary taxes to transit countries like Singapore and Malaysia, what a sin that we all sri lankan done to deserve this sort of government , most educated gone overseas , all uneducated tugs are in parliament staling our values and the country .
    if they ever want to make a sri Lanka a aviation hub they will need to have direct flights from Australia and African countries countries ,

    Apparently the flights have not commenced and who knows when it may start. I guess they are still proposing the route but maybe due to the competition it may be an idea. A case of wait and see what happens next.
