Why do Toll deliver, and Australia Post leave 'cards' for PO pick up?

I get deliveries to my unit about once a week - and think this is not that unusual for lots of Ozbargainers! When Toll deliver, their delivery person presses the buzzer (which is admittedly well up a steep driveway) EVERY time they deliver a parcel, even if no signature required. Australia Post NEVER press the buzzer - I just get a piece of red-written cardboard in the letterbox, telling me which PO the parcel is in. The it's me off to stand in the queue, to collect it. It makes no difference who is sending it, whether it's regular, express or registered, what size it is, or whether a signature is required.
If Aus. Post keeps bleating about a downturn in their business, they should try customer service! I don't send parcels through them, because the other shippers don't cost more, but do more. I do not work for anyone, happily retired, but like to complain sometimes.

  • I have the same issue as well. Would Australia Post get a lot more parcels to deliver every day compared to Toll which would cause them to slack?

    • My assumption is that the guy delivering the parcel doesn't want to wait for the door to be opened, because they might have a delivery quota to reach by the end of their shift. So they just card you and hurry off..

OR, alternatively they just want to get the job done quickly and go home because they get paid the same amount every day anyway.

Either way many people have complained about delivery drivers not even taking the parcel with them to the driveway — they simply card you, date/time the slip an hour into the future and leave. Complaints on Facebook and on Reddit.

  • Maybe it's a cost thing. If Toll take it back to the depot they then have to re-deliver it at their expense but Auspost make you go and collect it.

  • I live this pain often too. It's maddening when I'm sat at home and they drop the card off instead of delivering.

  • I face the exact opposite. The AP van that delivers my parcels just leaves them right outside the door. Regardless if we are home or not, the doorbell rings once, and then it just gets left there. The delivery guy is scampering into his van and does not wait to pass the parcel. My gates are always open, and I have been just fortunate to never ever had anything stolen. It's amazing I can come home and find large parcels in full view and they are still sitting there waiting to be collected. My luck I guess. BTW, I'm starting to worry now that 'signed for' parcels are being left at the front.

  • I live in a victorian house where the door is near the front street. Our living area is at the back about 20 m from the front door. Whenever i have an Aus post delivery , I hear the door bell go, immediately get up and walk to the door. by the time I get there the guy is already walking past our neighbours house. I always call them out on it as the guy skulks back with a sheepish look on his face and give a remark like "ýou guys dont wait long do you?" they always make up some lame excuse like I was just trying to read my forms to check the address of some similar BS. Typical fat bloated ex government organisation like qantas tht simply cant compete in the real world against real workers.
