Jetstar Flight Dilemma

Hey Ozbargainers,

I'm in a little bit of a pickle. I booked a one-way ticket a month ago from Melbourne Tullamarine to Sydney Kingsford Airport - Flight is on the 3rd March 2015 at 2pm and arrive in Sydney at 3.30pm. The plane is the new Boeing 787 Dream Liner and I've paid for 20kg baggage.

Here is the problem.. I was actually trying to book a one way ticket back to Melbourne from Sydney. (Depart Sydney, Destination Melbourne).. I know I know, I'm an idiot.

My question is what is the best thing to do now? Do I forget about it and cut my losses. Or does someone want it and they can change their name on the ticket.

I've called jetstar and they said it'll cost me $340 to change the date destination/departure. Cheaper to lose the flight and buy a new ticket (correct ticket this time hopefully)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

  • I dont have access to see the fare rule of your ticket so im not sure what rule you have to follow.

Jetstar is a LCC so they are not that helpful when it comes to problems like this.

But unfortunately as far as im aware (im at work now for a travel agency) you will not be able to do anything other than pay for a new ticket/baggage and try submit a refund for the unused taxes if possible (if cancellation is not aloud)

Jetstar generally will not permit a name change only a name correct (3 letters or less) and as you have already mentioned the flight change (change fee + fare and tax difference) is $340 more than the original price you paid.

Have you asked JQ if they will let you hold the value in credit and re-book at a late date? Could get a doctor certificate saying you are not fit to fly at the present time.. not guaranteed that would work now that you have already called.

It is a domestic flight so you could just have someone check in online and baggage drop and there is really only a slight chance you would need to present any I.D so i guess you could sell it or give it to someone who would want to risk it..

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

    • Hi davohatcher,

Thanks for your response. They weren't helpful at all. I rang them twice. First time a lady tells me it'll cost $112 to change the flight and get onto a new one. Which was pretty reasonable - booking myself online cost me $100. So the extra probably was some fees. I rang a second time and the bloke told me the best option was to get the flexi ticket package and that will solve all your problems for $340. Then I told him I rang earlier and got told the best option was $112. He got pissed and became even less helpful. No one in there to right mind would pay 340 for an economy ticket to fly to Melbourne unless it's an emergency etc.

If someone was to risk it, how much trouble could they get into?

      • "how much trouble could they get into?"

They won't get into any 'trouble' as such, as long as they don't actually pretend to be you at any point. What they are risking, is not being allowed to board. Which would presumably suck a lot, if they'd made plans revolving around the trip.

  • I did the same thing from melbourne to gold coast over christmas. Cost me a fortune to get us home.

    • +1

Sucks bad! Lucky for me this was a $100 lesson. Just means I cut down on unnecessary spending like fast food, coffee etc to make up the losses.

  • I often have to change low end flights relating to my job (meetings change etc), if you need the "Melbourne Tullamarine to Sydney" leg in the future (and know when this date and time will be) you can push the fare forward to that date and time, I think the "fees" for a date change are around $100 plus whatever the difference in fare is - if you can jag a similar or cheaper fare it may work out just ok.

    • Oh really, I'm flying back to Sydney on July but I haven't booked.

So it'll cost me $100 plus any difference in fare? Won't it be cheaper to purchase new ticket? New tickets are ~$69
