Need Assistance with eBay Transaction

I sold an item on Ebay and the buyer paid via Paypal. The item is worth around $90 and luckily I purchased Lost and Damage Insurance.

The item was posted on 17 February from Sydney CBD and it was going within NSW. The tracking shows that the item has been delivered on 18 February however the buyer has sent message today to advise that he never received it which is very strange.

Please note that I have already asked Australia Post to investigate this parcel however I am not sure how long it will take.

I have feeling that the buyer is trying to scam me as he has zero feedback on Ebay. If he ends up opening a Paypal case, am I going to lose my money though the tracking clearly shows that item was delivered?

Will I be able to retrieve my money from Australia Post?

    • If used signature on delivery and posted exactly to the paypal address, you will win the dispute.

    • If buyer uses, specific dodgy disputes like 'unauthorised transaction', you will lose.

    • No Auspost won't compensate you money because they've 'delivered' for all they are concerned about.

    • From my understanding, I need to use independent courier and show proof of parcel lodgement and delivery which I currently hold.

Why I am required to use Signature on Delivery?

What is the purpose of purchasing insurance if Australia post does not provide any cover?

What if the delivery drivers has delivered at the wrong address or they never delivered and just tagged it delivered?

If you paid for cover, then there will be a signature. If there isn't, then Auspost has to cover the cost as there is no proof that it was delivered to the address requested. if the driver pulled a dodgy and didn't get a signature, then they will get more trouble than they want….

        • I did lodgement via self checkout and when it asked for signature on delivery, I did not Opt for it however I did purchase $100 worth of cover for loss and damage.

I am not sure what do you mean when you say that the cover automatically includes signature on delivery.

        • @bluecasper:
I am pretty sure (90%+) Auspost would not let you purchase extra cover without adding signature.

        • @pinchies:

This is what copied form Australia Post website. Should I assume my cover automatically includes signature on delivery as it is for less than $300?

Sending something valuable or important? Extra Cover provides you with cover for the specified value of your item (up to $5,000) if your item is lost or damaged while being carried by Australia Post

          Price

$1.50 per $100 of your item's value (or part thereof); and
You must add $2.95 for Signature on Delivery if your item is valued above $300.
Please note: the Signature on Delivery fee does not apply to Courier Post, as this feature is included in the Courier Post service.

        • Ah, it looks like it might have been optional below $300. I didn't know that.

        • @pinchies:

I will see how it goes but it will be very disappointing if Paypal decides in favour of buyer.

    • Since the buyer is claiming non-reciept, I think if the OP can prove it was delivered (signature on delivery) then they will win. If you paid for extra cover, then that is only available with signature. Get the proof from Auspost, and post it on paypal, and you will have won the case easily.

  • If you have proof that it was delivered with a tracking number then you should be ok.

  • This is what I just read on Paypal. My tracking clearly shows delivery status and suburb where it was delivered and it matches with the address on Ebay. As per last clause, I dont need proof of signatures if item is less than $250 which gives me bit of relief.

For items not received claims or chargebacks, you’ll need to provide online proof of delivery documentation. Your documentation must show:
Status as delivered, or shows a postmark
    Date of delivery
Recipient’s address, showing at least city, zip/postal code, state, or country (or equivalent)
Proof of recipient’s signature, for items valued at $250 USD (or local currency equivalent) or more

think you should be fine in your case, just screenshot delivered status and you'll be right.

i had trouble with something like this last year, but from the other side. never got package, seller said its be signed for by someone i dont know, turns out it was at auspost and no one actually signed for it (got 2nd notice to pick up my parcel, never got the first one). so seller pretty much lied, or auspost website is super dodgy

ebay pretty much ruled in their favour straight away. im guessing they took a screenshot of auspost showing delivered, and case closed. the item was worth about $150.

    Thank you everyone!!!!

  • Buyer has contacted me saying that he has spoken with Australia Post and he has been advised that the parcel was left on this front porch and he believes that someone has stolen it.

He is now demanding for refund though he has not opened Paypal case as yet.

I am not sure why Australia Post will leave parcel at unsafe place without leaving a card to advise the location. In addition, I am not sure if buyer is telling the truth.

Should I let him open the Paypal case?

    • and he believes that someone has stolen it

This is between Auspost and the buyer really, if you have that there in writing, with them essentially admitting it has been delivered to their address, that will take any liability away from you.

Surely it becomes a police matter now, if it was stolen.

They will leave it if it doesn't require a signature, which is fair enough.

    • Should I let him open the Paypal case?

How do you plan on stopping the buyer? Confiscating his computer? If any one wanted to open a paypal dispute, there's nothing you can do to stop it. The only thing you can do, is provide the evidence to your case so paypal can close the dispute. The evidence here, is your tracking number. As long as it show's that the item was delivered to buyers post code, it should all be fine. If you want buyer to leave neutral feedback (doubt will give a + unless you give him free stuff) is to use your Lost and Damage Insurance that you paid for (check T&C).
