Inguinal Hernia Surgery - Brisbane - Anyone Recommend a Specific Surgeon?

Hi all

I've just been diagnosed with a Inguinal Hernia in the right side of my groin and I'm kinda worried about the surgery so I want to make sure I try and get the best surgeon for the procedure.

After a few days of endless reading and searching on the internet, I am a little surprised that when I google results to see peoples reviews on surgeons in Brisbane I come up empty handed.

The reason for the surprise is because hernia surgery is one of the most common in Australia and other parts of the world such as America yet there is no local information on stories from patients recovering on going through the same thing as me.

Can anyone share their story with me as to ease my worry and help me decide on the best cause of action.

Thanks

I had a hernia operation via keyhole surgery a year or so ago. All went well EXCEPT the surgeon said the gap would be about $300 and it was $900. I got him the health care fund money fast but the gap from me was a L O N G wait.
Regarding the pain etc … you will NOT be able to do anything for a couple of weeks even though you will think you can and I took 6 weeks before I lifted anything over 10kg.
Mine was down low near my pubic area and it used to "pop" out every now and again. I could feel it when I was washing the area in the shower and when doing planks. I am in my mid 50's if that makes any difference.

  • Hi Guys, thanks for the replies.

mattgal - I wasnt sure I had a hernia until about a week after the incident where I got sharp pains that would randomly shoot down to my groin section. The first doctor could not feel anything and said to come back in a few days if the pain was still there. So I did and went to another doctor who really dug in with his finger into my groin and since I have been in constant pain..

I went to get an Ultrasound done and he said the hernia is 4cm long by 2cm in height. It has not penetrated the little fatty area yet so there is nothing visible, I woudlnt even know nothing was that if it wasnt for this constant pain.

ozash - Keyhole surgery through your belly button? What made you opt for the keyhole ive read that there is a higher chance of the hernia returning through keyhole rather than the incision near your groin.

How has the pain now? Do you feel anything at all? Do you still work out? How long did you have your hernia before you got operated on?

kingwang - Ah ok. Well I see a surgeon tomorrow about it.. Just that on the internet you read a lot on what can go wrong like chronic pain, infertility, damaged nerves, infection, erectile disfunction, so I was worried that im going to a surgeon with no write up about him on the internet and it got me thinking..

Its just im pretty worried about it, ive had a pretty up and down 6mths, two deaths in the family, new born child, about to get married in 2 mths and all of a sudden this appeared out of no where and has just crippled me emotionally.

    Thanks for your replies guys.
