    it's in this week's catalogue

  • Do these taste any good or should I just stick to the genuine nespresso pods?

    • +4

If you can afford nespresso pods, stick with it.
This pods are a lot less "foamy" (doesn't really have the creamy texture of nespresso) and have a bitter taste to them.

    • You'll be disappointed if you're use to nespresso.
I've tried nearly every alternative brand, nothing really compares to genuine Nespresso.
      Espessily for lungo.

    • L'Or's good, but if I'm being honest, Iron Man is my favourite

    • -6

      Do these taste any good

they taste like warm cat urine.

should I just stick to the genuine nespresso pods?

stick with grinding your own beans in a real coffee machine. no need to pay $70 a kg for nespresso.

      • +3

Last thing I want to do in the morning is fart around grinding coffee, making coffee and then cleaning the whole thing up. This takes all of 3 seconds and tastes fine. I'll leave the real coffee for at the cafe and actually enjoy it instead of judge it like some sort of coffee snob.

        • +2

I have heard someone say that before… hmmm… all i do is literally push 1 button. Most decent machines grind the (fresh + cheap)beans automatically. The machine also cleans itself. About every 10 cups, you just slide out the 1 tray and throw out the bean scraps and waste water. I'm guessing the folks that think it is hard, haven't used a decent machine.

        • Rofl. Put beans in grinder. Press button. Come back after its finished. Make coffee. Damn Its hard life.

        • +1

          @Son ofa Zombie:

I couldn't agree more, if you don't want to mess around with a manual machine, invest in a decent automatic one. Sure, it's more expensive than a Nespresso machine (which are probably sold at close to cost), but it will pay for itself in the long run while also giving you better quality coffee.

I'm only using my Nespresso machine (alongside the manual one with a grinder) because I have been able to buy a large stock of cheap compatible pods. Once they run out, I will strongly consider getting an automatic machine.

        • @Son ofa Zombie:
thats what I do (auto machine at home) but a pod machine is great at work, no mess, no fuss and decent coffee.

        • +1

@Son ofa Zombie: fair points but how does your machine deal with the "problem" of different people liking different flavours and how much did you pay for your device V the $60 after cashback that I paid for mine?

    • the lungos are not great, the others are OK. I have to say the Coles finest brand are pretty good and the coffee is roasted in Australia.

    • I'm Italian and the L'Or reminds me a lot of Italian coffee. I actually really like the L'Or flavor, especially Sontuoso. Not too keen on the 'A hint of' ones, the hint is so minor you can't even tell, and they all are quite bitter. I'm pretty sure they have more coffee in them compared to the Nespresso pods because they are much more intense and bitter like coffee should be. Also, they don't have the metallic taste that the Nespresso pods have (but the pods are plastic, so it's a trade off on whether you prefer metal taste or leaching). All in all, I like both and I use both. As per the crema (the foamy part) I actually don't see a significant difference between that and the official pods.

        • whats negable about my post ?

          Well, that certainly was ;)

  • Excuse my ignorance but what is the regular price per pod?

    • Found it - 66c it is.

      • (ALL the following is just my opinion, but it's commonly said.)

For me, it's not. No way in hell I'd ever pay 66c. I'm too tight to pay that even for Nespresso - Which is easily the best of all brands & systems.

        They're regularly 20% off (25% or 30%?).

Some flavours/styles are terrible. The fruity, flowery, weaker ones.

But there are two i think are extremely good. Can't remember what ones, stronger ones. I retired my Nespresso machine semi-perm… Tried Vittoria (no it's not) & Map, rubbish. Aldi is easily bang-for-buck winner. Nespresso is easily the best, but so expensive.

I find these pods use the better machine/system (Nespresso), and coffee places between Aldi & Nespresso.

Seeing the 300 pod deal, it looks like the Nespresso machine will be back on the bench again!

On another note, my o-rings were also shredded on the Nespresso milk connections, but I replaced all for <$1. Take several photos, remove seals, take them to your local o-ring/seal shop, like this: www.renseal.com.au Highest industrial food-safe quality, dealing with experts, and paying the true price… from the manufacturer.

        • I don't know what what the o-rings are, but agree with everything you said about the prices.

All pod coffees are substandard compared to a regular grinder + espresso machine combo.

I always pull a double espresso using 15g of ground beans using my Rancilio set up. This is an equivalent of 3 pods, as each only contains only 5g of coffee!

        • +1

@elektron: Nothing will replace a "real" coffee… For the benefits or the hassles. No reason all the alternatives should never be considered or improved. Horses for courses, as they say.

Machines with milk frothers etc. use easily accessible o-rings to seal at several points. My machine has two 'male' plastic tubes, to connect the frother's 'female' hollows. Like valving. To pass steam and/or hot-water, it needs to pass it through, but separately. Each o-ring is a different size/thickness, and requires different materials/behaviour. The cost through official channels would be insane.

Not-only did I pay like $1, they threw ~5 of each in the bag, and sealed them separately with the original. It's not worth their time for 1. Like asking for 15c of mixed lollies :D

        • +4

          @elektron:

I am surprised at just how comparable pod machines are to a cafe made espresso. I have had some terrible coffees from large espresso machines in various coffee shops.

        • -1

          @robertm:

I am not comparing this to a cafe made espresso for a couple of reasons.

First of all, 90% of cafes have no idea about how to make a coffee. Let's face it, many of them think that the difference between a cappuccino and a latte is the sprinkles.

Second, I am comparing apples to apples, i.e. two kinds of coffee I can make at home - Nespresso vs the 'classic' espresso.

I use my Nespresso machine only for convenience to grab a tripple shot (an equivalent of a regular double espresso) to go in the morning before work, and I use my 'classic' set up only on weekends.

Make no mistake, while Nespresso is very convenient and can even be 'good enough', it simply can't touch a well made espresso from freshly ground beans by someone with reasonable skill and equipment.

At the same time, Nespresso pods are ridiculously expensive, I mean $140 per kg for their non-premium blends?! C'mon! I usually get my coffee from Manna Beans who post regular deals on here and provide excellent product and service that works out under $30 per kg for single origin beans including delivery.

Having said that, I work with someone who loves beer but says that all beer tastes the same to him.

        • @elektron:
I disagreed with some earlier stuff you wrote… but was nodding throughout this post.

Let's be honest, I think to pod-only people, $/kg simply doesn't exist. If it did, the "deals" would NEVER exist here. I only scratch my head when I walk-out with a small bag of pods for $100+

Comedians joke about getting crap haircuts & not saying anything. I go through that 1-2x every week (with coffee). Simply not going back for a month or more.

I compare (nespresso) pods as easier, faster, and pretty-close to RealCoffee, yet insanely consistant & much cheaper. I never really compared to manual home options. I'm not sure if I'll like the numbers… which are killing me these days.

Do we know of a valid total-cost comparison/review (machine/grinder etc)?

        • @Utopian:

Yep, I think we agree to agree :)

        • +2

Woops, hit the neg instead of pos button, sorry.

Cafe coffee generally is about as bad as you can find, often not even as good as a granulated instant you make at home. They might manage a decent milk infested latte or cap but if you want a long black or decent strong coffee forget it. There are exceptions of course - stick with them if you manage to find a good one (using the coffee "brand" you like) because they're as rare as hens' teeth.

        • @Possumbly:

          My thoughts exactly…

    • about $70 a kg

I recon Its good to see TA actually gets out :)

    even if it only Coles

  • Maximum 12 packs per person on-line?

    • Max 12 of one quality. You can choose 12 of another quality and so on…

      • Yeah, that's what I figured. Although I was after 30 packs of Onyx.

        • +1

You could be naughty and order 3 different types to get your count to 30, then exchange them in-store :)

        • @tightarse:

Good point! Although, probably more trouble than it's worth.

  • The code has expired? Getting a message saying "We don't have that promotion code on record. Please check and try again" when etering CLICKCOLLECT99.

  • Depends how serious you are with your home coffee. I like to watch the coffee stream coming out from the machine into the cup.

All the alternative brands I tried managed to turn into diluted coffee half way thru the process on a small cup setting. Only Nespresso capsules managed to do most of the way.

    Taste wise I prefer nespresso.

No back to the capsule, most 3rd party ones are made from plastic capsule and I don't know if they are BPA free. Also plastic with high pressure and reasonably hot temperature don't go too well. I am afraid one day the plastic will melt into the machine and eventually breaking it.

So I am sticking with Nespresso capsules for now until someone copy them totally. :)

    • Small cup is the only setting I really use (reprogrammed large for exact lungo). I have no idea why aldi have a large setting, & pods with large/small pics on the box, when there's not enough coffee inside.

I don't know what sort of temps you think are going through the plastic, but surely it's got to pass food-regs.

  • +1

    More landfill :(

Go for a grinder and beans, you will thank yourself :)

  • Tried these capsules.. ok but rather avg. I have proper coffee and grinder setup at home but also have nespresso machine next to it as that is the only capsule system that makes reasonably good coffee but it is expensive . Aldi one is much cheaper but i ended up selling it after 2 months as it is rather avg.

    • Nespresso better be better (excuse the pun) at almost 3 times the price of this deal).

  • I get this brand all of the time, opting for the Onyx strength (strongest). Quite happy with them. Pod machines are time savers… end of story. If I want a better coffee, I buy good beans, not over priced nespresso pods.

  • Good price, not the best tasting but cant beat 30c each.

  • The L'Or Onyx makes a very nice long black, recommend it and at 33 cents a pod it's a bargain!

  • Went to get some today and they had barely any stock on the shelf, I asked about the missing ones and was told this was the last of their stock since the sale ends tomorrow. She gave me a raincheck coupon though (for one set of 3 packs) which was nice.
