Need Advice. What's The Best BARGAIN RWD Sports Coupe to Buy in 2015?

I'm looking to purchase a new sports car this year . i would love some of your expert advice on what to choose.

At the moment I've been looking at the following.

2015 Nissan 370z ( powerful but look a bit dated)

2015 Toyota gt86 or BRZ ( very nice and bargain… but less power than my work car )

2014 Lexus RC RC350 ( Head Turning Style but price is pushing 70k)

2015 ford mustang ( don't know how much it will going to cost)

Thanks in advance

  • Golf R

    BWM A45 AMG

    Sti Rex

These would be my 3 favorite cars this year, bu none are RWD or a coupe haha.

    Get a Tesla

    • A45 came out last year ..85k plus ..and 6 month wait . TESLA OMG insane acceleration WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR … but would be more beautiful if it cost 60k …i cant afford it lol ..over 70k just too much for me

  • Both the Mustang (V8) and Lexus are around $70k+. GT86 is a fun car, mostly on track days because of the thin tyres but it aint going to win any drag races. 370z are ok, but yes hasn't been updated for some time and performance is down. Personally I like the bigger sports cars like HSV R8 or Chrysler 300, nothing beats a fat v8 & comfort. There isn't much else available that is RWD, most of them are AWD like the Subaru WRX STI or Evo or VW Golf R.

    • i agree ..Chrysler 300 SRT8 is nice and fast .. but I already have a four door sv6 commodore..

      • Why not get a nice S15 or Supra? Built properly, both are reliable and very fun to drive.

Brand new sports cars aren't too fun until you are around $100,000.

        Go second hand and modify!

        • i know nothing about modification …

  • How about an FGX Falcon XR8 (or XR6 Turbo)?
Would be cheaper than a Mustang (maybe), more powerful than a 370z, and more practical than a tiny BRZ/86.

  • If you got a Toyobaru BRZ you can quite easily and reliably have 200kw at the wheels for under 45k total with forced induction. More than enough to have some fun with it.

  • New NSX coming out soon……

    • $150k though

      • is it?!?! i never looked at price. I guess some do consider it a super car (lower end).

        • Yeah I was fascinated by your suggestion so I had a look into it, nice looking car but all reports suggested $150k base, so yes its definitely in the super car territory, although entry level at that.

        • nah mate . that's too much , what do you think new ford mustang turbo? .. 231kw .. if it cost less then 60k..

      • more like 200k

        • This is OzBargain, who pays retail?

        • some car you do have to pay rrp. but not for OzBargainer

  • 86/BRZ with a few mods. Plenty of 2L Boxer mods out there that are tried and tested.

Can't go wrong! Strong engine and drivetrain, not ludicrously expensive. Look the goods.

I'd hate to be boring, but I would suggest test driving each of these vehicles and see what suits you.

What are your priorities? (Status symbol, fun, resale?)
Do you want a good looking car? (You mention the Lexus as a head turner)
Car with lots of power? (Do you drive on nice stretches of road, or sit in traffic?)
Car that handles nicely? (Same as above, but are there any roads where you get to test out the handling much?)

There is also the new MX5 which is due mid year.

You don't ask for car advice on ozbargains. People here think a Hyandai i20 is a good car and that a Falcon on gas is a value buy.

    • +1

LOL…I think Hyandai i20 is a good car just not the car for me ..

      • -2

Yeah, it's not a good car in any way. I would suggest you avoid whirlpool and ozbargains and go to a proper car site

        • +4

I like how you avoid making recommendations as to ensure your opinion is not flamed down, but rather just flame others, specifically ones of those not in this thread.

        • -1

@cypher67: Not a personal attack aimed at anyone, an observation; most people on this website know absolutely nothing about cars, and certainly wouldn't know a good car if it hit them on the street.

        • @thorton82:
My question still remains, tell us what is a good car? And more relevantly; what car would you recommend to the OP?

        • -1

@cypher67: You didn't ask a question. But I would choose the new Alfa Romeo 4C

        • nice car ..i asked the dealer ..110k plus 6 months+ waiting list

        • not every car need to be fast to be a good car ..some people just need to get from point A to point B without having trouble … different car for different people and different purpose ..

i20 is a great car for someone don't care about cars.. sure i agree this is ozbargain not ozTopgear.. but there are ozbargainer like you here know about cars ..

        • @haoxuee: Ergo, an i20 is not a good car. Its like people who believe Lexus' are good cars. Maybe if you get an LFA, but anything else? No thanks.

        • like i said it is your opinion… not going to argue with you about it…i20 is a Award Winning car.. even Lexus has good reputation for reliability … and this is not my word .. i think Lexus won some consumer award in America again this year .. honestly i don't like Lexus but i cant deny their quality just because i personally don't like it ..

        • -2

@haoxuee: A car that is put together well does not mean it is a good car. Also, have you looked up the history of Wheels car of the year? If you trust hack Australian journalists, then go ahead. I think it's pretty clear however, that unlike a lot of the foreign press, they like to have their bread buttered.

  • is there a 370z replacement due soon (in Japan even?), that shape has been going for a while now.

    • 370Z NISMO …look exactly the same but faster ..its not a all new car to replace 370z

      • so no new replacement yet.
not even concept or show cars to say the new model will look like this?

        • +1

there will be a new z car but no concept or show cars yet .. maybe soon .. but don't think we can buy it until 2017

  • i went to ford dealership today ordered a mustang turbo without knowing the price .. but if it cost 50k . not bad if not i will get my deposit back ..dealer said going to confirm the real price next month ..for now they just guessing ..

    • +1

You should have ordered the V8. Its going to be a niche car, no one will want a 4 cylinder Mustang second hand. Like a Commodore, how many none V8s do you think they sell to none fleet buyers? Im guessing not many.

      • i really want a v8 mustang but not sure how much it will be that's why i ordered a turbo .. still 8 month away dealer said i can change it if v8 price is reasonable …. i don't mind turbo mustang it is not a slow car..and all car depreciate v8 or 4 cylinders ..i am going to keep it for next 5 years they both will be worth nothing by then .. not going to worry about a few thousand dollars in 2020..

        • Go for the V8 dude, pricing is just out, only 55k for V8 manual. Will hold it's value better and be more fun while you have it. And that V8 sound, nothing like it.

I am ordering mine in red. Bring on December 2015!

PS> check out this Mustang speed dating video, love it!

i upgraded my order to v8 today when i saw the price today ..gonna be amazing .. BTW which dealer did you ordered it from ?

        • @haoxuee: Good choice

        • @haoxuee:
I ordered from Essendon Ford, they have about 30 firm orders already, and apparently there are 1200 firm orders Australia wide. First batch of orders should get delivered between Dec 2015 and Feb 2016, according to Ford.

        • oh no . i should've ordered from Essendon Ford.. i went for Coburg Ford and there are 50 orders before me ..

  • I loved the new RC350! Was deadset on getting an E-Class Coupe but went to get my car serviced and Lexus staff showed me the RC - hard choice now.

    • agree it looks really good …and it will never break..but 75k with aurion engine .. i pass it

      • Think then engine has twin direct/port injection while the Aurion doesn't which is why you can get more power out of it.

I'd rather spend $70k on the RC with an Aurion engine than $70k on a C200 with a Renault engine lol.

        I'll checkout topgear thanks thorton.

        • i would go for F sport version (only for LFA speedo).. but 78k is a lot money to spend on 235kw compare to mustang v8 only 55k with 303kw now

        • @haoxuee:

The Lotus Evora uses an Aurion engine and it's 160k! lol

Why not buy a HSV if you're after power?

        • i own a new sv6 already …i dont wanna buy a hsv with same interior

        • lol..tell me about it my uncle's 90k RX450H come with aurion 3.5 engine and a 9v battery . 3.5 v6 unit is a very good engine that's why we found them in more then 20 different models .. but the problem with Toyota and Lexus they always carry over old tech into their new model( even the new RCF'S V8 unit is from the old ISF sedan)… 3.5 unit i believe is 10 years old now in human year that's like 90 years old ..it is due for a new turbo unit..BTW people said it is slow around the test track . RC is not meant to go fast .its a comfortable luxury cruiser with good look ..

    • Watch the latest Topgear, the RC is an absolute piece of crap.

      • i don't trust top gear just like you don't trust Australian motoring journalists only trust myself behind the wheel . BTW top gear think all American car are rubbish including mustang v8..

        • Topgear loves some American cars. (TV show that is, magazine are different journalists). They loved the Corvette (C6 and C7), they loved the two pickup trucks in the last episode. It is an entertainment show, but they raise some very valid points and their reviews are usually very astute. The RC is almost 2 tonnes loaded and underpowered. It was a complete boat around the test track.

        • i only watch top gear for entertainment ..never watch it for consumer advice .. ..if you watch top gear like me start from season one to the latest episode … the only person like America car from top gear is Richard Hammond … the quote from Clarkson
" ALL AMERICA CAR ARE RUBBISH " ….. people think Clarkson is a god or something ….
and what he said is the truth…i watch top gear for pure laugh only..

  • Definitely go the Mustang, it is the best looking of the lot, is the only one with a V8, and the only one that does sub 5 seconds 0-100.

    • hopefully i can get it before Christmas .. there are already 50 orders before me in coburg ford…btw is the aus model come with Shaker Pro Audio System with twelve speakers and BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert?

  • Does it need to be brand new?

You didn't really state it on your criteria.

In that case I would go for second hand:

    Porsche Cayman
    Porsche Boxster
    BMW M135i

Until they lump the WRX engine into the BRZ/86 or at least add a turbo/supercharger then it's just not quick enough. It's also ridicolous that they compensate the lack of power by using Prius tyres.

  • The thin tyres came to have fun at low speeds, not to compensate the low power of the flat 4! That what makes the gt86/brz such a good choice, fun and drift in safe conditions
