OAK Flavoured Milk 2lt $0.50 (Save $5.15) @ Woolworths Chelsea VIC

531

I saw this in Woolworths Chelsea yesterday. The only downside is they expire today 20 Feb, so you would have to drink it fast.

"Only downside is they expire today 20 Oct"… Would that be 2014 or 2015?

    • +5

What mikie means is…. shouldn't it say 20 FEB not OCT?

    • +6

I hope OP means Feb, or else you might need to buy a spoon also to eat it if it expires 20th Oct.

      Let's see:

      • Wrong store.
      • Misspelt the wrong store's name in the description.
      • Indirect link to the deal's image.
      • Started a sentence with "Seen".
      • Today's date incorrect.
      • Deal posted after it has expired. (Stock can't be sold on or after the expiry date)

Damn I would have thought you were negging this because the Cows are milked in stalls (cages)… LOL

I see marked down stock all the time at coles for sale on the same day of their expiry.

        • So do I, but if the staff notice or are alerted to that fact, they won't sell it to you.

They won't give it to you either, I've asked.

        • @Scrooge McDuck: Hello Scrooge.

You make an incorrect statement about the expiry date. If the product expires on the 20th then it can and will be sold on the 20th. (Not the 21st as it has therefore expired obviously)

Obviously they won't give it to you, whether expired or not.

        • @chill:

And black is white. Where's your source?

I've taken an item to the checkout; the operator has noticed that the item has an expiry date of that day, set it aside and explained that they can't sell it (I'd assume this is a store-wide policy). This has happened to me at least 3 times.

Can any Woolworths workers confirm if this is or isn't a store-wide policy?

        • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: We'll dump perishable goods on the day of expiration, we can't sell you out of date stock. If procedures are followed correctly, they'll be removed from show prior to trading on the expiration date.

        • +2

@chill: This is incorrect. The expiration date is the date that the product cannot be sold and must be thrown out. Anything expiring today (20/02/2015), like this flavoured milk, should have been removed from show before trading.

        • @crayner:

Are you talking best before or use by, or does the policy not differentiate between the two.

        • +2

@t_c: In this case I'm referring to "use by" as this is a perishable product; it strictly cannot be sold on or past this date, by law.

Incidentally, Woolworths policy doesn't differentiate between "best before" and "use by", as they're both thrown out on their expiration date. Other stores can be more lenient about selling stock past its best before date, that's up to them, but WW chooses not to.

I was not referring to colours. I was referring to black and white English language. To fit your idea it would have to be 'Use Before' instead of 'Use By'

          @crayner:
I find it hard to believe that shareholders or anyone else would approve of throwing out in code food.

Maybe your employer should update their website if what you say is true.

          @chill:

Although you quote the NSW Food Authority, it is based on the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. Quoting from a fact sheet published by the Queensland Health Department:

Foods labelled with a ‘Use By’ date cannot be sold after that date has passed. This also includes food that is being given away.

Therefore, it would be illegal to sell on the 21/02/15. But the seller may have their own policy, as would seem to be the case here, designed no doubt to attempt to eliminate any instance of expired food still being offered for sale. Under the policy, soon-to-be expired food should be removed from show on the day before the use by date. This gives Woolies one extra day to discover any items that may have slipped through the cracks.

It's a sensible policy, because the fines for contravention of the Code are substantial. Shareholders might approve of this kind of risk management.

    • more of a precautionary rather than best practice.

ie. Drinking this will force you to the toilet, most probably for hours on end.

    - Fix Spelling (Cloes)

    • +14

Maybe its because Woolworths buys out Coles in the near future (Oct,2015). Then call it Cloes for the lolz

      • -2

Then call it Cloes for the lolz

Woolies will just call the store lols for the lolz.

    • I used to try making frozen sticks from various drinks as a kid but soon discovered the sweetness was lacking and milky goods probably could have done with some glycerol or other anti-freeze. Maybe you can freeze it in a microwave proof container to make hot chocolate later.
