What exactly is a 'mattress protector' and/or topper?
Mattress protectors are like thicker fitted sheets that go under the actual fitted sheet.
They absorb the sweat/tears/body fluids instead of the mattress and you wash them when you change the sheets.
Ive always used one because it keeps the mattress itself much cleaner.
Make sure you get a cotton one if you get them, synthetics dont breath as well. But they're at Kmart/BigW/etc. for generally a good price. Oh, and dont get one that uses 4 elastic straps in each corner they SUCK, get one with a skirt like a fitted sheet.
Toppers differ to protectors in that they're often thicker to make your bed feel softer or firmer, that sort of thing. A lot of people use them on old beds that have started to sag too. They also do the protect part but they're mainly there to change the feel of a bed. Ive never used one though.
If you have kids that wet their bed then (waterproof) mattress protectors are worth a mint. And good ones are worth that wee more that you have to pay for them. Just knowing you have put it on provides you with a feeling of relief. And they're piss easy to put on, just like a fitted sheet.
