I'm 54 years of age - pre paid funeral Ads just started appearing on my OzBargain, not quite ready yet and probably never will but I take exception to marketing that makes assumptions of my interest or maybe OzBargain generally is in the their demographic?? So what really gets you upset when it comes to marketing assumptions?

Yep, went to ASOS and Surfstitch and now they're everywhere… not complaining though its better than a funeral ad.
Doesn't really upset me since the ads are fairly innocuous and tend to be driven by what I have been surfing recently.
Your ad however, wouldn't have been too nice to see. Maybe you surfed something prior that alluded to requiring that service? In my mind any sites to do with insurance/financial planning could have triggered that ad.
No… not really upsetting I pretty much laughed it off. I have my cache clear on exit purely for that fact that I don't want Google making assumptions. It could be just coincidental but got me wondering that maybe we at OzBargain are an older lot than I thought.
However the Poll is proving otherwise its early days yet, but so far its mostly a younger audience which is what I would have thought is your typical OZbargainer.
its all to do with what you have been searching for - this could be from health insurance, holidays aimed at older people (cruises),looking for adult nappies :) anything. I am 50 but get clothing, holiday or electronics ads as that seems to be what is looked at the most lately, I guess.
My ad showing for this page is offering 20% off "Happiness & its causes" featuring the Dalai Lama. Pic. I think they nailed that one for this thread. LOL.
The ad I got served the other day for a free Good Food card was great and ended up posting it as a deal.
Yep, the ad I'm getting now is advertising a slimmer wallet with Bellroy???
I find Ozbargain is the way to a slimmer wallet:))My ad showing for this page is offering 20% off "Happiness & its causes" featuring the Dalai Lama
Dammit, that looked quite good and I was all geared up to book after browsing the website… then I saw the prices for the 2 day conference…
They're certainly not causes for happiness :(
I get Ads for clothing, must be telling me a need new fashion sense.
My current ads are Dominos, Delivery Hero and Foxtel…order in food and get fat in front of the telly…ah…what a life.
I was gonna say exactly this. I can't remember the last time I saw an internet ad.
I get them on my phone on occasion, but they aren't very targeted (usually an ad for whatever the latest shitty mobile phone game is).
I block ads on most sites however have found keeping them on for OzBargain & newspaper sites such as The Age & Herald Sun, I sometimes get served ads that are potential bargains.
P.S. You can block ads via My Account if you don't wish to use an ad blocker.
I would have thought it counter productive to block ads on OzBargain, would that not endanger its existence? Ads pay for infrastructure, please correct me if I am wrong.
Ads don't bother me although they may alienate some people, I think we all realise OzBargain is not a charity and hence they are a necessary evil.
@MMM: I'll get negged to oblivion for this but I take a NIMBY approach to internet advertising - everyone else can generate the advertising revenue from their own non-ad-blocked traffic.
OzBargain makes money on referral codes too doesn't it?
@neil: Yeah, I meant affiliate links.
I've blocked ads on OzBargain. As neil has stated, we can choose to block them through My Account on here.
I don't want or need constant little reminders that I'm meant to be having babies and being a grown up now, kthnx. :P
(but more seriously, before I had them blocked, I found that most ads reflected any previous web searches I'd done or sites I'd recently visited. Though, in saying that, I do recall seeing completely random, inexplicable ads on OzB on occasion too - none of which interested me. Ie. online clothing stores etc)
I found that most ads reflected any previous web searches I'd done or sites I'd recently visited.
Yup, they serve as a constant reminder in hope of tempting you to buy it if they keep spamming you with it. Never works lol, I just get reminded to find a cheaper store lol
"I found that most ads reflected any previous web searches I'd done "
That would probably be a function of Google looking at persistent/normal cookiesleft by those sites, rather than any algorithm on Ozbargain in particular. "Bleach Bit" is a good utility for clearing those out in Windows and Linux, but take care to check the options if you save passwords, form data etc. It's more a cut and polish than a soap….
"Retargeting" — google it. Seems to be happening a lot not just on google ads but on Facebook as well, keeps on reminding me the Amazon items that I have looked at.
YouTube was giving me ads in Philippino. Also gave me an ad for Curves (female gym) and I am male.
Speaking of Prepaid funeral plans I had an interesting experience with my lovely (deceased ) mother.
When alive Mum boasted that she would never cost us kids a penny. Stating that she was even now paying for her own funeral and when she fell off the perch, all costs would be covered by her funeral plan. She paid faithfully into the plan for about 20 years.
Then mum got dementia. A relative moved into her home and cared for her. He paid the now 6 monthly payments of the funeral plan. After 4 years mum was moved into a nursing home. My eldest sister took over mum's affairs and she forgot to make the payments. After 18 months and mum's time was near, the relative reminded us of the funeral plan.
Sadly we read Clause 26a: when payments are in arrears of 12 months , the policy is considered to have lapsed.
The family discussed just how often this sort of scenario might be occurring.
People considering a funeral plan might be better off just putting the money into a bank account , that way you have the extra cover that it will probably be found when getting probate.I browse OzBargain most of the time on my phone, which is an ageing Lumia 900 running Windows Phone 7. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but I have never seen an ad when browsing with this phone.
It's either something to do with the browser (based on Internet Explorer 9, I think) not rendering the mobile site as intended, or perhaps the mobile site doesn't try to display ads for lower resolutions.
Whatever the case, I'm not complaining! I actually much prefer reading through threads on this phone than say a tablet or PC- it's much more readable, I find.
Geeksme: a smartwatch that analyses your quality performance with your partner
Why would they think I need something like that? o.OI now do most of my searches on Duck Duck Go. The interface is pretty good and the search results… well, not as good as Google's but definitely relevant enough for me.
I also block ads on my Android phone using Ad-Away, which also saves a little bit of bandwidth and makes sites more compact (as there's less images to load).
Hey im 30 and i never heard of Bowra Odea before.. Now i have, so marketing win for them. I ll be sure to prepaid my funeral before the deadline
I don't so much get annoyed by marketing assumptions… I just laugh at them. After going onto ASOS, I started receiving these "pop cherry" ads everywhere…
The funny thing is that there is a hot looking blonde girl on it usually and the title "pop cherry" on the ad.
Then there is the DSE and OW ads which are so ridiculously not cheap that it's funny.
