Buy some $10 six packs of Kronenbourg or Minimum Chips with the dan murphys card

    • Is there a sign up fee for the dan Murpheys card?
I will buy two packs of kronenbourg thanks!

      • Free sign up for the card. You will get great use from it, bargains on quality alcohol every month.

    • found a huge bottle shop in Brisbane inner north the other day.

Like to try different beers as get sick of drinking same old.

Found a carton of MX dry 3.5 beer (24 bottles & cold) for $24.99.

      So bought it.

At 1st thought it was another brand with new label, but not.

Very little branding on box or bottle.

      It says

      AUSTRALIAN BEER CONNOISSEURS
800 TOORAK RD HAWTHORN EAST VIC

      MADE IN AUSTRALIA

Is that Coles head office ?

      Or ?

BTW-tastes really good, especially after a few.

Reminds me of the generic beer in Canada in late 80's. Bier/Beer white can written in French & English & % alcohol & not much else. It was way cheaper than anything else, so we drank it (had no money at all at time).

Around the same time in OZ, Mildura Lager was being dumped. I think brewery was closing down.

1st can was awful, 5th ok, but at $11 for 24 cans, when most other beer was $20 for 24 cans, it was a bargain when a student, with $0 in bank.

What's the occasion / who will be drinking this stuff?

Apple head is nasty. Tasted it once. For a little bit extra you could go with the safer option of Somersbys which is very popular. Pretty much tastes like apple juice. Very sweet, not luxury cider :P but.. if you want cheap cider…

    What about Aldi's liquor selection?

    • It's a housewarming and there should be around 80-100 guests aged 18-26!

So far I have a box of corona and rekorderlig (safe options haha)

Thankyou ! I will put somersbys on my list :)
There is a dan Murpheys across from my work so I'll probably be shopping there only!

      • +2

In that case, your best bet is to simply walk in there and grab a staff member off the floor, and ask them for help choosing beers and ciders that are cheap and/or on special. Explain it's for a housewarming for up to 100 guests, young peeps, etc. Staff generally tend to be very helpful and know the products well ;) There might be some good deals on better beers (that bring them down to the same, or very near to, the cheapest beers). But either way, at least they can show you were the cheapies are (and most likely will be able to give you reviews of the drinks personally lol).

Ah. Good old Dan's. Customer service utopia.

        • +1

Yes! They're so kind at dans!
I don't want to ask for help though because I'm always so indecisive and will feel bad when I don't get what they suggest haha

Happy for people to suggest here and make a list :D

          @lisaxjane:
They don't mind at all. Often when I ask for help I even get a better price :)

If light beer is acceptable then try aldi.. ctn 24 glass stubbies around $22, NZ made beer and tastes good to me.
Tried a Victorian made pear cider recently and it was great, cant remember the name though :-(

    • +1

Wow so cheap! I will defs also check Aldi out now then haha
I'm willing to spend around $50 per box
      I have $350 to spend
It's a byo event but I do want to supply some also!

          Thanks for the link!
I always forget aldi sells alcohol. Hopefully they have some instock at my aldi!

        • @lisaxjane: You might not want to get all the beer as aldi beer, since, if you're willing to spend $50 per box, you can get some pretty nice non-aldi beers for well under that. $40 will get you a good case of premium European lager (Carlsberg, etc. - there's always one on at a low price).

IMO I'd rather a bit less beer but more quality than just a crap load of aldi beer, especially not light beer!

        • +2

          @lisaxjane:

Beware that light beer will not be popular with 18–26 year olds.

Homebrew lol… Cheap as it gets.

    • -1

I used to think that… then looked at the $35 for the mix we will have to pour out because something went wrong and it tastes horrible. $40 for a case ($10 6 packs from Dans) is pretty hard to beat.

      • +2

I dunno, I can bust out the same volume as 5 cartons of beer for about $30-$35. Works out to be what, $7 a carton? Plus I can make all the dark beers and stuff that are much more expensive. If you give them enough time to sit they taste really good.

        • What base mix are you using?

        • @roughana: I'm just using the most basic home brew you can, the coopers kits plus their brewing sugar/enhancer etc. It's usually around $13 a can and $4-5 for the sugar. I have bottles from forever ago which I reuse and I buy cheap white sugar for priming.

The taste can be pretty nice when you leave it for long enough. I got hold of someones second hand fermentation tub and now I can do two batches at a time so I don't need to do it too often unless I'm trying to build up a big backlog.

You get around 20 litres and a 6 pack of 330ml beers is about 2L so you get about 10 6 packs or 2.5 cartons per brew for about $17. I got the cans on special for $10 each just the other week too.

        • @Talonparty:
Thanks for that. We had some success with that for a few batches and then got more adventurous with the base mix. Hence my increased cost of failure.

        • If you have 2 fermenter buckets you should be doing bulk priming instead, apparently it's a worthy improvement. I have just bought my 2nd bucket.

Wow, that's a big house-warming! Make sure you warn (/invite?) your next-door-neighbors on either side, so you don't get off on a bad start with them. They probably won't come anyway, but no harm if they do I presume. Re the beer/cider, $350 is quite a lot to spend for an event that is supposed to be BYO! I'd be inclined to spend a bit more on food, and a bit less on beer/cider. Bear in mind that quite a few will not drink anything, and most who plan to drink will at least bring some of their own, given that it's BYO.
On the other hand, I guess if you end up with heaps left over that's not such a bad thing… it keeps well!

    • We've been living here for about 6 months already
So it's a very late house warming
      And THANKYOU
I totally forgot to let my neighbours know
I just put a note in there mail box now haha

      Food is already sorted!
But yes hopefully I'll only spend around 150-200
I always get carried away tho !!!

I only intend to have 5 of my own boxes :)

I quite like Foster's Light Ice. When going out and still wanting to drive home I used to favour Cascade Light, but Light Ice has a slightly more pleasant flavour and is lighter in alcohol.

    • Thankyou for letting me know :)
I'll be sure to buy some!

  • My list to buy so far is :
    kronenbourg
    Somersbys
    Storm
    Fosters light

    Already got :
    Corona & rekorderlig
    thanks for your help guys!
    I think that's all I need :)

bitburger is a nice german beer but i do prefer lowenbrau.

If you want cheap and decent German beer get Oettinger.
Currently $42 at dan murphys for a slab of 500ml cans. yes the big cans.

    • you can almost guarantee one of these are ~$40/ 24/500ml at Dan Murphy; Oettinger, Hollandia, Bitburger, Karlovačko, Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Fraser Briggs from Aldi is quite good.
Monterey (which is seasonal at Aldi) for $37 a case is awesome. Leaves Corona for dead.

Some independents have a beer called 'Hooten', which is really nice. Type your postcode here to find your nearest stockist.

I am quite fussy with beer, having made good quality homebrew for 20 years, and I find it difficult to drink the likes of Tooheys, VB etc these days.
Bitburger is ok (as is Oettinger & Lowenbrau)

The Storm Ice would be better than the Fosters Lite Ice (I've had Non-alcoholic beers with more flavour).

If you buy a 24 case of Emu draught, there will probably be 26 there the following day. ;-)

Fraser Briggs from Aldi is great!
The bottle packaging doesn't look cheap either - the guests wouldn't know where it came from.

I'm not sure you should be buying any more beer. From your display pic, you're already sideways.

One of the reviews there is a classic!

      Exquisite Drop
      5 / 5
      Toolie, Age: 18-19 Gender: Male
      Enjoyment 5 / 5
      Value For Money 5 / 5
"When a friend first purchased a slab of this I thought he was crazy, how could a full strength beer that is less than $1 a can be any good. My word was I in for a shock, the taste is to die for and I would happily pay $5 for a can. Would highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys a fine drop or is looking for a change".
Pros: price, taste, tun, can design, refreshing, hits the spot, gets girls, good mixer with protein shake
Cons: doesn't come in 100 packs
I would recommend this to a friend!

      • I hope he tasted beers that $5/bottle from DM. Classic for sure! just old enough to drink…

I was paying $30 for 30 cans of Hammer N Tongs
Shootoff of Boags apparently and they are better than Tuns which are US swill made for woolies.
More than palatable when icy cold

    • Hammer N Tongs is quite bad mid strength beer, really

      • I wouldnt call 4% mid strength and I like it better than tun
        Each to his own

    • Hammer & Tong is the worst.

We have 3 mutuals on FB. Am I invited??

    • +2

      Not creepy dude

  • Just get a slab of James boags premium. Normally get it on special for 40-45. Best standard beer out there. Won't be disappointed.

  • What about cheap wheat beers? Stuff like erdinger or hoegaarden?
