I wish to fly from Sydney to Melbourne and am looking at leaving on either this Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
I haven't flown in ages and I was wondering what my best option is in terms of finding the best price.

Jetstar works fine for me. If you go cabin baggage only you don't even have to queue as you can just use the self check-in. In some ways it's as simple as public transport. Also, tiger is the subject of that channel 7 show 'Airways' if that means anything.
I should note though that a lot of the Jetstar flights could be to Avalon airport, which could be tricky. I'm pretty sure that all Jetstar flights between Brisbane and Melbourne are to Avalon, so for me in Queensland Gold Coast airport can be better (and cheaper). Dunno if you could do the same from Newcastle.
When you ring up to make the claims. Do you pay the price with the 10% discount or do you pay the higher Jetstar price and they give you a voucher for the price difference?
Once our reservations agent has verified the other airline's flight or competitor's holiday package is lower, we will make available for purchase the applicable comparable Jetstar fare or Jetstar holiday package at a price 10% below the other airline's fare or competitor's holiday package price.
They beat it by 10%. At least that's how it worked when I used it earlier this year. I also see that nothing on that page says anything about a voucher.
