  • Thanks for registering your ticket request. We'll be in touch next week to confirm your attendance at your chosen screening.

    • +2

I registered, but I did not get the "Thanks for registering your ticket request. We'll be in touch next week to confirm your attendance at your chosen screening." after I click submit, tried on IE and Google Chrome.

      Am I doing something wrong?

      • I'm getting the same problem on Safari on iPhone. Just reloads the original webpage.

      • Given the likely shortage of tickets or system melt down, I thought it was a good idea to show their response.

Despite requesting a ticket, it certainly is not assured. System of allocation is not explained.

  • Entirely free
    Expect travel advertising.

    • I'm always perplexed by these sort of comments. What kind of OzBargainer doesn't have an email account specifically for freebies?

      • -2

        Dear perplexed,
Who said anything about emails / spam? I was talking about good old time advertising (that's why I used the term) designed to appeal to the likely audience.

It's a movie featuring travellers shown to promote a travel company - so expect ads & promotion before / after movie. It's the sales that pay for the screening.

The choice of movie will attract a certain demographic, often with a higher discretionary spending & time for their product.

Emails to promote the business are just normal with these deals, and are easily avoided, so not worthy of comment by the experienced OzBargainer. You'll always be perplexed if you read what is not there.

        • That was a fairly verbose (and unnecessarily condescending) reply for a comment that was ambiguous at best (the term 'advertising' covers a wide range of marketing methods, including emails). But many thanks for the clarification.

        • @Sabs:
And your reference to me as "What kind of OzBargainer" wasn't?

You read into a simple comment what you wanted to. I've never seen spam being referred to as advertising on OzBargain, most call it what it is - spam.

OP had stated the movie was Entirely free in the deal description. I said I expected it would have advertising.

I didn't expect my ability to use basic email skills would be questioned, over a flippant 5 word remark.

        • As opposed to other movies?

My comment was intended to be tongue-in-cheek. I do apologise if it caused offense.

        • @Sabs:
Yes, generally all movies & media contain advertising (even OzBargain).

But this movie is shown primarily to promote the company's travel packages. It is totally for advertising / marketing purposes. The company knows it will generate interest in travel to India. That's why they are showing it. And being a subject of interest to an older audience, it is a lucrative market segment.

If we enjoy it & don't buy, it will of course be a bargain for those who enjoy this style of movie.

I enjoyed the original movie. But maybe once is enough to watch talented actors play retirees seeking love and respect in India? But it's free!
          So thanks OP ;-)

        • Oh, dude, hehe. I think I'll leave you to your pedantry. Have a good evening. :) Thanks again, OP, for the deal!

        • @brucefromaustralia: yes, unlike the previous deal for "what we did on our holiday" which was actually free

        • @Jackson: And here I am trying to work out how any money is being paid by us for this screening…

        • @Spackbace:
There was never any mention of payment of money ;-) Entirely free!

I just cheekily pointed out there will be another way we 'pay'. As we do when watching the original movie on Ten, etc - through the consumption of advertising. (But there we can avoid it.) I thought it was so obvious it needed no further explanation.
This is one of the Intrepid Travel events, to promote their company's products.

Even the free movie offer Jackson mentioned is to promote the sale of the movie through positive word of mouth & social media. But there the promotion is far more subtle.

Didn't expect people upset by a "no such thing as a free lunch" statement, not meant to be taken this seriously. It's off topic.

          Thanks for the deal ;-)

        • +1

@brucefromaustralia: All good, not aimed at you, was just highlighting the phrase "which was actually free"… could've been sarcastic, cant tell on the internet :P But my comment was aimed at Jackson, so shush ;)

  • +3

I doubt they'll be able to fulfill all requests but here goes.

  • -3

no HOYTS in melbourne.. what a let down :(

    • +3

      Complaining about something that's free?

  • +3

If Harvey Normans ever wanted to take revenge on OZB Professionals and herd them physically into the one area this would be it depending on the movie being offered. All that is missing is free food and drinks

    • A trail of eneloops would be the ideal lure to bring in the OzBargainers.

  • Ordered some. If I change my mind I'll give it to my mum. I think this is more her demographic anyway.

    • Hi, do you have "Thanks for registering your ticket request. We'll be in touch next week to confirm your attendance at your chosen screening." after submit it?

      Thanks.

      • Nope. I'm in Perth, would the city make a difference?

  • Thanks, OP!

  • +2

Really liked the first film, suprisingly enjoyable!

    • it portray the stereotype of local people there, especially in the scene where the young man try to market his old hotel to westerners. or was it when he try to get the loan to build the hotel?

      • You mean the movie wasn't true :-(
Ah, that the trouble with escapist fiction. But I enjoyed it as storytelling, despite the stereotypes.

        • +1

stereotype exist because majority doing so. it's like generalization but of course not all will behave in the same way like the movie shows.

        • @brongz:
Stereotypes are the bread and butter of popular cinema, whether Hollywood or Bollywood. (Poor b&b - being stereotyped again.)

Whether that is healthy… at least an informed viewer can hopefully see past that very limiting view. Travel broadens many people's perceptions. Real life is much more complex. Movies rarely can handle that complexity.

Now I've just got hop on my kangaroo, and nip down to the bottlo for my ciggies and a slab of beer.

I doubt there would be any culture that is entirely happy with the way they are depicted in popular culture. It is a very limiting view.

  • nothing happened when i entered details. page just refreshed. no 'thanks….' bit

  • was gonna get some for my mum she loved the 1st movie but seems to not work maybe all sold out?

  • Me too….I don't have the msg of Thanks for…..

  • yep..same here. no confirmation, page simply refreshes.

    • ditto tried a couple of times but website is broken

  • Due to popular demand our exclusive screenings to see THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL are now fully booked. A confirmation email will be sent to all successful winners on Monday 23rd February. Apologies to all those that missed out.

    • "Winners"? You mean it's not first in best dressed?

      • +3

They run a credit check to see if you can afford to buy their travel packages first ;-)
(So it's more best dressed, first in.)
Who knows how they allocate tickets. Maybe to their registered clients first?

  • Sounds like a shit movie… but some of the actors are top notch. I'm actually tempted to go see it.

  • +1

This may make those who missed out on the opportunity to maybe be in the running for tickets - not to feel they are missing much. The slow pace will induce a soporific state in those used to action in their movies.
I did enjoy the first movie - sweet but unremarkable.

The Guardian 3/5 review from a few hours ago

A second trip to retirement-home India provides more tourist-friendly scenes of pedigree acting, this time with hothouse import Richard Gere

undemanding, misty-eyed stuff; carried through by its seasoned, thoroughbred performers

Judi Dench and Bill Nighy are arguably the central figures this time, their romance inching along as each obstacle is laboriously hacked away.

contrast(s) the pinched, gloomy prospect of a decline and death in wintry, cold-hearted Britain with the possibly-achievable golden-years-in-late-summer India, where the latter’s irrepressible joie de vivre and bustling go-getter confidence is a marker of a societal respect for the older generation. Or something along those lines.

Its claim to say much about India is much more questionable… In any case, so limited are the Marigold Hotel’s residents’ interactions with the outside world that the film may as well be set in Bexhill.

A sea-change (very British) fantasy with dhal & stereotypes.
As countries are outsourcing their aged care to developing countries, it is a possible portent for aging Western nations.

International Release Date: 6 March 2015

  • +3

Ten are showing the original movie, Saturday 7:30pm (check local times)
Followed by The Full Monty - which probably has a similar audience, so it will not suit some tastes.

  • I guess I didn't get a ticket as I didn't hear from them today as promised.

Anyone receive an email with the tickets?

    • +1

I dont think anyone has found out yet, winner or not

      • We'll be in touch next week to confirm - I think they're leaving it a bit late for a Wednesday screening.

No real issue, as I don't think it will be much different to the original (shown on Ten 2 nights back).

    • Email & Tickets received :)

      • Arrived 20 minutes ago…
Congratulations, you're invited to see THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL thanks to Intrepid Travel and Air India

Thanks for entering our competition to win tickets to our exclusive preview screening of the new life affirming comedy THE SECOND BEST MARIGOLD HOTEL on Wednesday 25 February

An OzBargain night out, with free taxi home (as long as it's less than $30 after GoCatch removed rest of credit).

  • Nothing here yet.

  • Nothing here for the Perth screening I got in pretty quick after the OP :(

  • Just received an email saying that I didn't win tickets. But I can get 10% off their India tour. Promptly deleted email.

    Maybe I am wrong, but I don't remember it being a competition…

  • So for those that attended was there a hard sell before hand?

    • +1

Only soft sell. Thankfully little - a 10 minute sales pitch before movie (found it informative & I would now consider their tours) plus a bag containing their tour catalogue, 10% off India tours deal, and a blank notebook from Lonely Planet. Certainly did not get in the way of the movie.

As for the movie, I would not pay to see it. The audience (mainly older females) did enjoy the romance & comedy far more than I did. The appearance of Richard Geer brought whistles & sighs. The female actor's response played well to that audience. It seems the contrived and fairly unnecessary US side story paid off for the producers. Very little of India in the movie - couple of tourist spots, a few streets, and a tuk-tuk chase.

Comedy seems to have been plundered from traditional British sources like Faulty Towers (mistaken identity of hotel inspector), and even Carry On movies. Lots of mistaken identities, misunderstandings, and affairs as the basis of the movie. Pretty predictable.

But for free, it was enjoyable enough.
