Sony Z3 Dual D6633

So I am super close to buying this phone, but I just had a thought about it's dual sim functionality.

It supports 4g which is good, and you can select which sim you want this to operate on.

The idea is to run 4g calls/texts/data on the "main sim" and then be available to take call on the second sim (no data required)

What then does the second sim operate on? GSM? 3g? I can't seem to find an answer anywhere, except that it won't be LTE.

If the second sim is GSM only, and they shut down the network at the end of 2016, that is going to hurt.

Thoughts?

  • 3G ain't going anywhere, son.

    good phone, btw.

    • Yes I figure, but I'm worried that for example;

      Sim 1 = 4G LTE or 3G
      Sim 2 = 2G

When 2G gets shut down, dual sim feature will be rendered obsolete. Am I off the mark???

  • My daughter purchased an Xperia Z3 in Dec 2014. In January, it showed signs of the screen self-cracking. Fonebiz want @$250 to repair it. Thi is my second issue with a Sony phone involving Fonebiz.

    • I've had mine since mid Oct 2014, no self cracking yet. I've heard it might be a thing but doesn't seem to affect all phones.

      Bad luck on yours mate.

      • Many thanks. She is at Uni and has $30 a week to live on.

        • Just out of curiousity, is she using a case that wraps around the back or some sort of protection that impedes heat dissipation?

From what I've read about this issue, it seems to be due to the heat build up on the top area of the phone causing expansion of the components and cracking the glass.

My phone runs hot near the top when I use it for prolong periods but thankfully self cracking hasn't happened to me. I've recently changed to a tempered glass back protector and the devilcase bumper which seems to help cool it down a little better.

  • Why worry, 2G is planned to shut down on Telstra at the end of 2016, that's about 2 years worth of usage. Then you have Vodafone and Optus which will go a bit longer.

    • The scrooge within won't let me buy a phone that might lose functionality <2 years…

My work phone is a SGS2 and my spare an Xperia Ray if that gives you any indication of my phone lifespan expectations!

What are the differences between this dual sim Z3 and standard Z3?

Besides having dual sim functionality of course.

  • I'm fairly sure your second sim should be able to atleast get 3G, though I can't say for sure. I'm basing this guess off my experiences with Mediatek Dual Sim phones. The previous gen 3G Only phones put the 2nd sim on 2G while their new chipsets put the 1st sim on 4G and the second on 3G. My guess is that the 2nd available modem within the phone is relegated to the 2nd sim. Since this phone is 4G and generally I feel Qualcomm has more matured tech in terms of integrated 4G Modems in their chipsets, I would be suprised if the case was otherwise.
