Aus Post

Hey everyone,

I know their prices have gone up and whatnot but just questioning one thing. How accurate is the online postage calculator on the Australia Post website? I don't post things often, average once a month however needed to post something out today. I put the correct dimensions and weight in and said it would be ~$18. Not too bad. Get to the post office.. $26. This is always the case. I am beginning to notice whatever the postage calculator says, it's always approximately $10 more at the post office. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks!

  • Are you sure you are using the correct measurements, or the same service?

If you underestimate the size and weight of your parcel, it can give you misleading information, where the store will calculate the exact size/weight.

The store may also tack on additional services that may add $1-2 dollars for insurance or delivery confirmation.

  • I find the online tool quite accurate.
Was it perhaps a parcel to the USA? They have an extra customs handling charge for items above 500g.
Did you weigh the final item including all packing? If the paperwork, tape etc pushes it up 10g into the next tier that might explain it.

  • short answer no, i use the pdf that lists out the postage charges too.

They could be upselling you with tracking etc. Are you weighing/measuring properly?

  • a few mm out can make a big difference to costs.

  • AusPost online calculator is running the exact same calculations as the software that determines your fees at the post office.

As AusPost works in brackets it's possible that the extra packaging is bumping you up in either the weight or the volumetric weight. A lot of people forget that volumetric weight can often be what you're paying for rather than the actual weight of an item.

Aside from that do you have a tendency to add things like signature on delivery and/or insurance?

  • in this instance it was a Sodastream Play I was posting within Australia. Looked on three websites which listed all the same measurements and weight and entered it all correctly. Same standard delivery it was offering me online.

This was 10$ more prior to adding the extras such as signature and delivery which obviously bumped it up even more >.<

    • So you didn't measure it yourself, just took the measurements from a website?
I think I can see where your error was introduced.

    • Did the measurement included the box?
