So, I am up with new query, should I go with Mac or Windows for my new laptop? mostly I am using my laptop for work, surfing, watching & downloading movies, doing work on MS office…& hardly for gaming purpose.I have always used windows laptop & new with Mac. I like Mac but I have no idea is Mac good for my above purposes? I am considering HP Pavilion 15.6" 15-p108TX W8.1 Notebook - Silver for $999 from dicksmith at 15% sale price & MacBook Pro 13" 2.5GHz Model #:MD101X/A for $1349. I am not in hurry & can wait for 10% discount for mac range.

work, surfing, watching & downloading movies, doing work on MS office

Work: MS office / Office 365
Surfing: Firefox or Chrome (both work on either OS)
Watching and downloading movies: BitTorrent works on either Os, so does VLC player.
MS Office: Office 365 works on both PC and Mac

Your choice of OS doesn't really matter as much as you think it does. Most of what you do is probably going to be done on the web anyway — web apps and websites are OS agnostic. Microsoft Office works the same on either platform too.

The question really boils down to which platform you're more familiar with and what kind of hardware you prefer.

One thing I will advise though, is to steer away from the crappy mainstream notebooks made for general users (e.g Pavillions, Inspirons and Acer Aspires) and perhaps look into a sturdier, business grade notebook (Dell Latitudes, Thinkpad X, T or L series, HP Probooks, Acer TimelineX series). Check out the Dell Outlet for some great notebook deals from time to time and check out upcoming Lenovo's Chinese New Year sale

As someone whose been using an HP ProBook 4530s for the past two years, I don't ever plan on buying another HP laptop again. That thing has so many problems that I wouldn't have expected when I initially got it. I'm not alone either as I've seen from my numerous visits to their official forums.

    • Thanks, it really helps.

  • Make sure that your Mac or PC will have a SSD. It matters a lot even if you are going to use the laptop just for work and browsing.

Therefore, MD101X/A is not a good choice at all. No SSD and no retina display, two really big things.

Have a look at this one:

    Or probably that one:

    • Thanks, I really need to consider laptop with SSD

  • Two great comments from scrimshaw and brightaussie.

Also consider Macbook Air. They are about to release a new model and the old one will be discounted.

The Pavilion you mentioned is an awful deal. No ssd means it will run way slower than it needs to.

In terms of Windows vs Mac OS they are about the same in everyday use. I like Office better on Windows then Mac. But Windows needs more care from the user, with reinstallation needed every so often. It's much easier to get malware on windows too.

  • When the new Mac will come out? I mean what month?

  • go Mac

ive converted less than 6 months ago after years of Windows and Linux.

what else can I say - it just works.

im slowly converting to Mac, the 5k iMac is next on the list :)

    good luck with your choice!

I bought the Mac the other day.. Still getting used to it.

      • nice one!!!

        grats.

im almost certain youlll never go back to Windows bs.

        cheers

  • I made the switch to Mac about 2 years ago, I'm a Network Engineer. Best decision ever. I run Fusion for the apps that simply do not have a Mac alternative (I'm down to 1 app, unfortunately it is LOB)

Don't treat the Mac like Windows though, it is different and you will need to relearn a lot of things.
