My Toaster Just Caught on Fire

So I was using my fancy Kenwood (1.5 yo) toaster, and after 1 min the toast on the right side caught on fire. Flames were around 8cm high. I never toast anything with fillings. Obviously scared the living daylights out of me. i screamed, panicked, turned off the power and luckily the flames died down. Even my kmart $7 toaster back in my college days never caught on fire, and that was 4 years old.

Anyone been through a dangerous situation with kitchen appliances? Please share.

The bread caught fire , not the toaster. More than likely an edge of the bread was touching the element. It could happen to any toaster. It happened to us (no flames but smoke, burnt corner of the bread, we have a Sunbeam toaster.
Dont worry, keep on using it.

Did the smoke alarm go off. as well ?

That usually amps up the situation.

Maybe the crumb tray needs to be emptied.

  • Hi, thanks for your replies. By fancy, i meant the design of the toaster is nice. The warranty is one year and it cost me $105 from Bing Lee. I had two slices of toast, only the right side caught on fire less than 1 min was turned on. I couldn't tell if the toast or inside bit of the toaster caught on fire. It was a frantic frightening experience for me to turn on the toaster again. Smoke alarm didn't go off. Crumb tray was recently emptied.

Don't really care about complaining to consumer protection or whatnot, it was just such a scary experience and wanted to know if others have been through it as well.

Your smoke alarm should have GONE off. I accidentally burnt my toast as I wasn't paying attention, little bit of smoke and voila the smoke alarm went off like a firecracker.

"it was just such a scary experience…"

You really do need to get out more.

        What a dumb, pointless comment.

Did saying that make you feel so much more worldly and experienced?

Does your e-peen feel much bigger now?

Maybe if you find yourself facing scary dangerous situations on a frequent basis, you need to reassess how much of a klutz and liablity you are.

        :)

Have you checked the crumb tray?

  • Scary, I would test it again in a controlled environment. Or perhaps even call bing lee or kenwood directly for advice. I have never ever had toast catch fire before so im hesitant to say it was the bread touching the element….the design shouldn't really allow for that.

Regardless of whether it is a 'fancy' $50 toaster or a $15 generic, I don't think it's a good idea to leave a toaster unattended. It is after all, a device with heating elements that get hot enough to brown a piece of bread, in a relatively short amount of time.

That said, make a habit of emptying the crumb tray of your toaster and don't let it accumulate. Particularly if you eat toast every single day — it builds up fast.

As an addendum — I've seen some people try to make a grilled cheese toastie by putting the toaster on it's side which is basically a recipe (hah!) for a toaster fire. Never flip a toaster on it's side when it's in operation — tried it myself and ended up with a ruined toaster. Sandwich tasted good though.

what sort of bread was it?

burnt raisin toast is one of the largest causes of false fire alarms in office buildings.

and did you have something to eat?

  • Test it again outside. Did the "gates" grab the toast correctly? I've found if you put larger bread in the toaster it does not close evenly.

You have to buy sliced bread and not slice your own bread (it can be uneven). The bread shouldn't touch the sides, otherwise use a sandwich toaster.

Try cleaning the bottom tray so that there is no crumbs at the bottom which can also catch fire.

  • Answering the question:

Not yet, but I'm waiting for the blade of my Aldi knock-off Vitamix blender to come loose, penetrate the jar, fly out, and embed itself into my eye Final Destination style - it's been recalled by Aldi for an exchange but I'm too darn lazy to go through the process.

Ps. Hmm…might just throw in some Nanna's berries to up the danger factor.
