iPad Mini 3 compared to other tablet devices?

Hi all, I'm still thinking if I should buy an iPad Mini 3 or not. I've been looking for an article that compares an iPad Mini 3 and how it compares to other tablet devices for the same price. Say a hardware and software comparison between a $450 iPad Mini 3 compared to a $450 Samsung Galaxy.

I made an Apple thread earlier, but this is a different question.

I'd appreciate any help!

I think Touch ID is the only difference between the ipad mini 2 and 3. Save yourself ~$100 and get the ipad mini 2.

Biggest issue is whether you want Android or iOS.

    • Thanks so much!

The Samsung seems to have better hardware with a quad core CPU and a higher clockspeed, but it has less performance???

Performance Basemark OS II: 768 Basemark OS II: 1099 / Basemark X: 14781

      • I will repeat what everyone have been saying on every single post about comparing iOS and Android, you are comparing an Apple to an Orange.

iPads basically are optimised more because they, unlike Android, are produced by the creater of the OS and has only few models meaning that it can be optimised more. Also, iPads run things natively whereas Tab S doesn't at the moment. Tab S will receive Lollipop sometime this year, probably very soon, so that might change the benchmark and make Tab S run smoother (Especially with the ART).

Also, you have to bear in mind that Tab S does have higher resolution as well, so that might have slight impact on the performance.

  • Tab S has better hardware (higher resolution, mainly) but you'd probably be better off with iPad mini 2 if you want to use it as a simple ebook reader. Just ratio thing, 4:3 vs 16:10.

  • vastly expensive for what you get

and why 16gb and then 64gb?

It's apple way always aiming for maximum profits people either put up with 16gb while for some thats fine but if you want more storage you either go all the way to 64 gb which is like $100 more or whatever or put up with 16gb.

It's very sneaky and i will not support a company who does these types of things.

      • man, I am 110% with you and will never ever ever buy apple products FOR MYSELF…

        i use a Nexus 7 for work

but education uses apple exclusively and to me, nothing is more disgusting that seeing a classroom full of kids with $500+ tablets they suddenly all need to "get an education"

no wonder they are the worlds most valuable company when they can get all them school kids to have their shit because its mandatory

  • Visit a shop. Try both devices.

The differences are pretty obvious once you get hands-on.

Let us know your thoughts once you have actually tried these devices hands-on.

  • iPad Mini 3 is basically iPad Mini 2 + a fingerprint reader (aka touch ID). Apple probably did it that way because they want to sell more iPad Air 2, and there is really not much competition in the 7/8 inch tablets.

Comparing to Samsung. Samsung tablets would have more features (including the ability to run two apps side by side / multi window mode) and Android gives you more freedom on reading / writing files and e-mail attachments. For entertainment, iOS still have more games (and generally needs less initial setup - it's basically all of the apps on various pages / or in folders).

iPad Mini 3 isn't a good buy (iPad Mini 2 is more cost effective, as you are not paying $100 for a fingerprint reader).

  • I was going to get a Mini 2 originally as its a good bang for the $$$ but got an Air2 when Dicksmith did the 4 hour sale last year. I have to say the fingerprint thing is so useful, I use it with Lastpass (free of course from Ozbargain deals) and have thumb/finger access to the many sites I use. Really as much as the Mini 3 seems an absurd price to pay over the Mini 2 if I was buying one now I would get that. However your needs may well be different.

Recently bought a Teclast X89 with is a copy of the iPad Mini running Windows 8.1.. that was US$186 delivered from memory and for the money is a great little machine. I believe it has the same screen as the Mini 2 even… it's more flexible than an iPad, but then equally its not quite so 'pick up and use' friendly… no problem for me, but if I was getting something for my parents for instance I would go with the iPad still as messing about with that will not mess it up whilst messing about with Windows 8.1 will..

Had android devices too, Nexus 7 2012 being the last, but certainly prefer Windows and iOS.

    • The Teclast I got was effectively this one:

      http://www.teclast.com/en/zt/X89HD/

Though without the 'HD' in the name, they put in a different CPU (higher Turbo speed, possibly other differences).

They sell it in Dual boot Android/Windows and Windows only… got the Windows only version.

  • iPad Mini 3 and Mini 2 are pretty much similar except for 2 features.

    1. The Fingerprint Scanner in iPad Mini 3
    2. 4G Coverage if you are buying the LTE one has the additional 700 Mhz in Mini 3, Mini 2 does not have it.

Except for these 2 features it is pretty much the same. Unless you consume a lot of bandwidth and have a very good plan the 700 Mhz is not required.

Finger Print scanner is more a personal preference. I personally wouldn't care for it. There are some good deals out there for the mini 2.
