OzBargain Hacks

I couldn't find a thread with OzBargain hacks, so decided to start a new one.

I'm sure many of you guys have a certain email address for those deals where you have to subscribe/ join mailing lists.

I came across a website http://10minutemail.com/10MinuteMail/ which works as a burner email address that last for only 10 minutes. It has a built in inbox, and does not require you to log on which is perfect for signing up to websites, and not wasting those precious seconds logging on ;) Though whether this is ethical or not, it's up to you.

If you guys have any other hacks, please feel free to let us know :)

  • Compilation of Tips from 2013

What is the tightest thing you do on a regular basis?

At this very moment, I'm looking for accommodation on AirBNB.

Tip: Always ask for a better rate. They can only say no. Nothing to lose.

    • And call before you make the deposit because it takes time to get the refund if overbooked.

      • Call who?

        • I actually meant contact, the Host. See here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/162637#comment-2263600

          @bargainaus:

Ah right. Yeah, I've messaged every person before booking to confirm availability as some have come back with not available despite it being available in the calendar. They don't even fix it up so not sure what game these Airbnb hosts are playing.

        • Sadly, I've also messaged a bunch of people who don't return their messages. :( Still looking around for accom…might just go with hotel in the end.

        • @jennkei:

Yeah, very frustrating. Where are you looking?

    • How does it work out though? Do they change the rates on airbnb? Or do you have to do a secret transaction? lol

For me, airbnb in most cases isn't really all that cheap compared to regular hotels. But I supppose it'd be useful if you want to rent the whole house to take advantage of facilities.

There is a function where they can offer a special rate to an individual person.

Depends on where you are going. For cities with exorbitant hotel rates such as New York, it's well worth it especially for longer stays. I tend to look for places with a kitchen as it works out cheaper plus I get sick of eating out every day.

For places such as Vegas which have ridiculously cheap hotels, I think it's not worth it.

I used VRBO (similar to AirBNB) for Las Vegas and it was definitely worth it. I rented a room at MGM Signatures for about 40% less than the cheapest online rate. Only difference was that there was no daily room cleaning, they just came once during the middle of our stay to clean and change linen.

Similar note on accommodation, a lot of the larger hotel chains have best rate guarantees which you can hit up for additional discounts (rather than just booking the lowest rate on another site). Otherwise, you can often try to approach a hotel to match/beat an Agoda/Expedia rate - this can be especially useful if you want to be booking direct for loyalty reward reasons.

Also, I've found HotelClub.com/Visa to occasionally outprice every other comparison website, but you need a qualifying card to book.
