Queen Bed $800

Hey guys, looking to move out and looking for a Queen bed (Inc frame/mattress) for around $800 in Sydney. Anyone have any reccomendations or places to look. Is it better to buy a combo or seperately.

Cheers!

Avoid ensemble type if you can. Separate bed frame and mattress is best.

OMF have the mattresses for $299 up. Fantastic Furniture have a base (slat) for $169 Bondi Queen upholstered.

Having bought the OMF mattress just after Christmas, they are replacing it today, no charge as I am not happy with the comfort level I choose originally. Thats one advantage with them.

Another factor with all beds is the time of guarantee.

Guarantee's are prorata. works like this.

Buy a bed with a 10 year guarantee, after say 5 years it "fails". You get 5 years back of value off your replacement, which is half price off the new mattress. problem is that most times you only pay half the price of a mattress in the first place. The replacement is valued by the manufacturer on the RRP of the replacement, not it's sale price at the time of the fail.

From past experience I have found it's simply better to buy a cheaper (not the cheapest) mattress and replace very 5 years or so, rather than a top of the line with dubious guarantee value.

  • If you could increase your budget, $950 for a Queen Size Ergoflex Memory Foam Mattress and a nice bed frame from Tommy Swiss on Ebay for around $2-300. I wouldnt take the above advice to buy a cheap Mattress, we spend so much time on them and you dont want a sore back or a bad nights sleep. After sleeping on memory foam I've had amazing sleep quality, its improved my back pain and overall I highly recommend it.

  • Thanks guys will look into it. The Tommy swisss frames are all in melbourne. Can getting a crappy $200 frame and a $800-1000 mattress be fine. Does the frame actually help that much?

    • Can confirm, got cheap $300 frame and expensive $1400 KB last year. No issues so far.

  • Anyone know what mattress place provides bang for buck. Myer/Ikea/OMF. Alot of the mattresses every where have big savings but not sure which are just marked up for the savings to appear big.

    • Most mattresses are on sale, so yes its hard to tell what's a "deal"

First you need to decide on your level of firmness that you like to sleep on.

Second watch the pillow top craze, which seems to add to the price. Pillow tops according to most manufacturers can compress (they say it's normal) so over time this can in effect be similar to sagging of the mattress.

There is No alternative to going and trying out a bed in a store to determine the firmness that you require. As I said before the advantage that I found with the OMF is their 100 night comfort guarantee where you can swap for another if you find the comfort bot to your satisfaction - i.e. too hard, or too soft.

Other companies offer similar, you just need to check this out. I was just mentioning my recent experience, with OMF, others may mention companies that they have found this experience with.

And as I said before higher end mattresses are not always the way to go. Bang for Butt. Your Original price of around $800 is fairly good for a reasonable mattress that should last 5 or so years. And a good slat base should last for at least 3-4 mattresses if not longer.

Having spent $1600 on the mattress we just replaced, while the one before that was $800, we got no extra life out of the $1600 mattress (being 6 years). Now I like a firm mattress so any sagging and my back tells me fairly quickly, little aches that disappeared with the new mattress.
