Uses for old driver licences?

Hey
I have recently got my full licence in NSW and was wondering if my old P licence is still useful. This P licence does NOT have a hole punched into it since i got a replacement licence only to find he lost one later. The licence with the whole punched into it i have thrown it away.

I would still be able to use it as a form on identification when entering pubs, clubs etc?

I keep the licence in my car and hypothetically if i were to forget my wallet( which has my full licence) and get pulled over by the cops would you recommend showing my old licence or because it's not my current licence i can actually get into more trouble, due to idea of fakies and having it in my possession.

You can use it to slide it through your keyboard to get the old crumbs out.

  • ID if you're not driving.

Don't show the police an old licence. My sister had her old one behind her new one in her purse (she'd just slipped it in on top) and got a big lecture from a cop when he noticed it.

  • Not sure about NSW, but it might not be legal to keep an old licence after getting a new one

    • but it might not be legal to keep an old licence after getting a new one

perfectly legal to keep it, just illegal to use it when driving

  • Didn't the RTA used to tell you to hang onto your old licence as backup identification.

I would probably keep it in the car as a backup (I'm always forgetting my wallet) and if you need to show it make sure the first thing you say is that it's an old version because you forgot the current one. Will make it easier for the police to check who you are. Maybe you should lunch a hole in it too.

  • Fairly sure you aren't supposed to have it - at least in SA, you must hand your old licence in when you go in for a replacement or renewal, or otherwise they make you sign a stat dec confirming that you are no longer in possession of your old one.

This was a point of consternation for me recently as I went to Service SA to get my R-date class added to my licence - they took away my old drivers' licence and gave me a temporary piece of paper - my pleading to keep my old licence fell on deaf ears (my Aus passport was in the UK for a UK passport application at the time, so I would have had no other photo ID). The guy at the counter reminded me (correctly) that drivers' licences are not actually endorsed by the SA Govt for use as proof of age, and that I should get a Proof of Age card. So I did - and that now sits in my spare wallet to be used as an ID in case I ever lose my licence (whether physically or legally!)

If you wanted to use it for ID in clubs and pubs though, I'm sure nobody would bat an eyelid (until it expires, anyway). :)

I keep my old licence and a cancelled credit card (the expiry on the front is still in the future) in a spare wallet with $50 cash. While not 100 points on its own ot was a godsend when I lost my wallet as I had enough ID to collect parcels, board flights, etc.

    • Do the same thing.
Also had another wallet with an old ID, expired bank card etc for when I travel in case I get pickpocketed or held up

  • You have to keep it to use as ID in case you lose your current licence.
