Bigpond Thomson TG782T Replacement or Alternatives

Hi Dear folks of OzBargain, just wanted some ideas/knowledge regarding this wireless modem of ours.

We have been using this modem since the start of our contract with Bigpond which is about 3 years ago. (contract finished mid last year). Now I was wondering if anyone can suggest an alternative wireless modem or router to replace our old Bigpond modem? It's still working but I think it's time for it to rest.

Thanks and hope for your suggestions.!

  • Honestly, all modem/router in the market right now are better than the Telstra/Bigpond supplied unit, especially the Thomson.
You need to know if you need a modem, a router or both and if fibre connection is coming or available in your area.

If fibre is available, then you better off using the ISP supplied fibre modem and hook it up to a wireless router. Netgear Nighthawk product line is decent depending on your budget. The router must support wireless 'ac' nowadays.

If you stick with ADSL/2+, then you will need a modem/router unit. I have been eyeing for ASUS DSL-AC68U for a while as it is highly recommended.

    • Thanks for your feedback! =) if you're referring to the NBN (fibre) in our area then it will not be in the next 12 to 24 months as its not in the priority area for that project =(.

So how does that work? Would you be able to suggest or post a link here for a wireless router which can substitute for our crappy one? and is it just a matter of unhooking the old one and plugging the new one in???

      Thanks in advance!

      • Yes, some area will have NBN, some fibre-to-node depending on where you live.

So since you are sticking with ADSL2+ (I assume) or Naked DSL, you will need a modem/router as one unit.
Modem to hook up your telephone/ADSL line and router to broadcast the wireless throughout the house.

Generally, it is not plug and play as you need to put in your ISP settings such as username and password. The process is simple as everything can be managed through a web interface. But first you need to find modem/router that suits you. ASUS DSL-AC68U is a decent unit, but is around $300. Obviously, you can get something cheaper. You want a router that support 802.11 ac to maximise your wifi speed, your router only supports b and g, not even an n and definitely not ac. Wiki it up if you want to know the difference.

Google up "best ac modem" and make sure the unit has both modem and router functionality.

        • THanks A lot Chazfg. I will try to research on that. Can you suggest a particular one?

        • +1

          @angelkulit025:

It depends on how much you want to spend and the coverage area for wifi. Big house? small house?
The link below might help and once you know which one, search through ozbargain for best deal =)
I recommend either TP-Link Archer D9 or Asus DSL AC68U
