Cheapest Android Phone with 4.4 or 5

I am looking for a cheap and relatively powerful android phone to use as a work device.

  • It needs to run 4.4 at the least but 5 might be nice :)
  • I am not bothered about brand, even foreign models.
  • Needs to have a smallish screen. 5" is too big to lug around in my pocket.
  • Dual SIM would be nice as I travel over seas a lot but not essential.
  • Must be unlocked or be unlockable.

Thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations. You guys always know best.

Edit: Budget is up around $100. Doesn't have to be bargain basement if there are better models for a little more money.

Heaps of Chinadroids fit the bill.
Really depends what network support you want/need as to which model though.

    • I'd prefer unlocked as I use foreign SIMs. 4G support would be nice but not essential.

      • You've misunderstood my comment about Network compatibility.
All Chinadroids are unlocked for any network, but many have only limited network frequency support on 3G and 4G.
If you use Telstra, there's one list of suggestions that support 850MHz 3G
If you use optus, there's another list of suggestions that support 900MHz 3G.. very few support both 850 and 900MHz 3G.

        • I understood what you meant perfectly well. I know there are different frequencies for different regions and was simply pointing out that AU 4G would be nice.

Telstra Tempo, which is a ZTE T815, is $59.

At the moment that would be the cheapest 4.4 phone, available off the shelf, retail in Australia.

Officeworks had it for $24.99 a while back, absolute bargain.

    $11 to unlock.

Wouldn't pay $59 for it though, as for extra an $30 you can get a far better Huawei Y550.

I think you have many options in the Chinese mobile market.
I will propose some of what I consider appropriate for what you're looking for …

All of them are dual sim and 4.5 - 4.7 "
    Doogee Latte dg450: 72$
    Iocean x1: 99$
    Jiayu G3c: 95$
    Thl 4000: 90$

Here you can see a comparison between the four.

If you need 4G.. here you have two more options.
    Blubooo x-4 95$
    Lenovo A606 97$

Huawei Y550 does not have dual sim, but it is a tremendously good deal.
None of the ones available locally have the specs - ie Android 4.4, dual sim etc.

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the help. Looks like the Y550 is the one for me. I've done some research and seems like it's pretty easy to root and unlock.

    • Do you know how to root it?

      • always cracks me up.

      • There are a few articles on how to root and some even have tutorials on updating it to lollipop.
