Which Travel Insurance Company Would You Recommend? The Free Credit Card One or Is There a Better/Cheaper Alternative?

I always pay for flights using my Amex credit card with free travel insurance, however I never had to make a claim before.
With all these cheap flights coming out, I would like to ask the Ozbargain community for travel insurance advice/experiences. Hopefully it is something we never have to encounter, but accidents do occur.

Are the credit cards free travel insurance cover good or are there better and/or cheaper alternatives that you can recommend?

Has anyone made a travel insurance claim before? Was it straight forward to deal with?

cheers

My family used Travel Insurance Direct few years ago on a trip to Japan, my daughter ended up in the emergency in Kyoto to have stitches on her head! Upon our return, the claiming process was quick and simple. A friend of ours translated the hospital receipt for us, we sent that to Insurance company with a claim form. We got our money within a couple of weeks. We have been using them ever since. Highly recommended.

I recommend you read the product disclosure form carefully and select the company according to your needs. My father is 93 and very few companies will cover you for a relative of that age(i.e. I may have to cancel or come back should something happen to him). Also if you travel more than once a year look at purchasing an annual policy as they are not that much more expensive. You are also covered for the excess should you be hiring a car.

A cheaper alternative to Free insurance ?

    • LOL. Good point. :)
Has anyone tried to make a claim via their free travel insurance on the credit card? I'd imagine it's a tedious process and they will only cover limited things. I'm thinking of actually paying (how unozbargain of me) for travel insurance for piece of mind. It looks like Travel Insurance Direct is the way to go.

      • the free credit card insurances are no worse than normal insurance companies when it comes to claiming, it's just that they often cover less than another policy. the excess is usually a bit higher than normal policies in my experience also, but there's nothing wrong with them as long as you understand the maximum claims etc
