what is the benefit off this over the normal media center tv guide. I find that works pretty well

    • Accuracy, series link, remote recording etc

It's a great service for media centre PCs or compatible PVRs

So what you get for free with tivo they charge you $100 a year for?

        • +1

Sure, on one hand. Then again, Tivo more or less failed with their attempt to get into the Australian market so arguably their pricing model which focused on high upfront purchases probably didn't work out too well either.

If you still have a Tivi and it's working though, then it'd make sense to stick to it.

        • @Smigit:
My fetchTV box also does most of the things you mentioned… it came free with my optus cable.

        • Yeah - but that was always one of the selling points of Tivo. I loved my Tivo, very user friendly and great functionality. Partnering with Seven on launch was a mistake though.

Important to note though that the model over in the USA for TiVo is a lower cost for the box and ongoing subscription. We were paying for the functionality like the EPG and series link but upfront.

        • @masuta: Yeah certainly isn't the only option, and I imagine many people will do a set and forget and don't need remote access and the like anyway. I've never personally used it, but many who have seem to swear by it. If I'm honest I'd love to try it if I do get a PVR, and would likely base my hardware purchase on support, but I'd certainly trial the service before putting down too much money since I do think it's a bit over priced having not played with it yet.

Fetch TV would work well but it'll have a subscription of sorts too. It is a shame TiVo left the Australian market, would have liked the competition to have been there and I'd have thought they could have fared well in Australia given cable boxes (with their own built in guides and PVR functions) seem less prevalent than in the US. Ohh well.

Accuracy, series link, remote recording etc

my Foxtel box already does that…

        • -1

Your point being? The question was relating to media centre TV guides. I too have a foxtel IQ and am not a subscriber to IceTV - just saying it's a good service for certain use cases.

        • +1

And how much is the foxtel box and subscription. IceTV benefits those who just want free to air TV.

      • Media centre is pretty accurate, gets data from fta channels, I series record so remote record no use to me

        • I use an app called Remote Media Centre on my phone and tablet. It allows me to view my Media Centre guide and record shows while I'm out. I can even watch Recorded TV with it.

It's used in conjuction with Remote Potato server installed on the Media Center PC.

      • woah my WinTV hardly misses a beat; guess i 've saved me a few hundred $ over the years! :b

      • The Free To Air EPG is extremely accurate, arguably a good deal more-so than any of the third party EPGs. The only thing you get that the FTA EPG can't give you is the 'repeat flag', which lately hasn't been terribly reliable anyway.

They lost me when their Lifetime Membership was a maximum of 5yrs.

    • +5

Silly billy, you have to understand that lifetime does not mean lifetime. Wait what …

    • Product lifetime

      • +1

Still capped at 5 yrs even though the product lasts longer.

      • Which is silly for a services company that isn't producing the hardware. Exactly what "product" are we defining the lifetime of? I get it for say a GPS unit where they want to cut off updates to older devices after a number of years and the same company owns the entire product pipeline. This however is a service which sits on top of third party devices that all will have their own different lifecycles. In five years that same service could be used on multiple devices or on a single one that is still going strong. I could buy a discontinued refurb unit today which other than the warranty has no real future as far as support goes.

Honestly I think it's a bad definition at the best of times and intentionally misleading, but when it comes to services they should drop the 'lifetime' word and sell it for what it is which is a five year membership.

None of that is to say it's not a good service and it isn't worth the price…I just hate how its marketed.

  • Thanks for this, my renewal was due soon so perfect timing!!

  • anyone use this that also has foxtel IQ? (with remote record?)

  • Personally, I think IceTV is still ahead of the others. i would not pay the usual $99 but this price is pretty good. IceTV has the best remote iPhone record setting i have used.

I also have the new Humax 4tune HMS-1000T that uses the new Freeview info. Pretty good set up and an amazing device, but still not as user friendly as IceTV.
