Nikon D750 Flare Issue - Grey Market Import

Hi,

I thought this might be of interest to anyone out there considering buying a grey import Nikon body or who has done so in the past or who owns a D750/considering purchasing one new or second hand.

I recently purchased a Nikon D750 body from DWI. Fairly smooth experience apart from the PayPal address verification step which is unusual and delayed shipping a little. I still got the camera very quickly mind you! No issues with paying any import tax.

I'm loving this camera, however, they are subject to an internal flare issue when shooting in high light situations and directly at the source of light. Nikon's response has been very good, unlike previous defects on recent bodies. More details on the issue including a serial number checker and how to identify when buying a used one if it's been fixed:

Although this doesn't impact many (if any) of my shots as I don't normally shoot this way, if I don't get it fixed, it could affect the resale value. Also, how frustrating would it be if you got that perfect shot and it was ruined by the issue?

Therefore, I contacted Nikon Australia today to find out if they would fix this for me, even though it is a grey import. They confirmed they would, as it's a global service advisory. They said they would email me a courier request email form. Good news!

I'm yet to receive the form, but will keep you updated with how I go. They estimated 2 weeks to fix the camera. However, I expect a little longer if there is a backlog!

Tl,dr: bought grey d750, subject to flare issue (link above or Google), Nikon Australia will repair(!), waiting for email to request courier.

Nikon are generally pretty okay with grey imports if it's an actual camera-wide fault. I had a similar experience with the D600 and the oil spots issue. They fixed it pretty quickly and without hassle despite not being Australian stock.

    • Ah you had the D600! How long did it take to fix?

They took around 3 weeks, but realistically, it had to be shipped to them and back, so I'd say around about 2 weeks of actual turnaround time for them.

  • It seems that Nikon gets better after-sale services compared with Canon. Mine EF 50mm 1.8 MkII still in processing and takes forever to be shipped from Canon warranty (after 1.5 months)…

1.5 months with no 50! Ouch. For the cost of that lens wouldn't they just send you a new one!

and they even lost my parcel. It will take forever if I didn't call them for enquiry. Thank god I sent my lens with a tracking number otherwise I need to take all of the responsibilities.

I finally know how disorganisation of the Canon warranty workshop is!

The last Email communication was on 20th of Jan and I haven't received any replacement yet (I called them but they mentioned it's still on back order now.) This is ridiculous!

        Hi xxx,

Workshop had advised that they are unable to locate your name or lens in our system. They have searched the EF5018 lenses they have received along with your name and serial number.
Kindly provide a copy of the proof of delivery so we can check further.

  • Camera sent 24/2. Awaiting its return

  • Camera was returned in 4 weeks. They stuffed up replacing the grip (was bulging out) so I had to drop it into local repair shop and they fixed while waiting.

    Flare issue fixed.
