ASUS 15.6" X551MAV-SX391B W8.1 Notebook - terrible touchpad - barely useable - what are my options re: return to Dick Smith

Hi Everyone,
Today I purchased an ASUS 15.6" X551MAV-SX391B W8.1 Notebook from Dick Smith for $349, there was no display model and it was the last one they had in stock, I saw the laptop advertised on the Dick Smith website. I got it home, set it up and found that the touchpad is simply horrible to use, fine movements are not detected and as a result when you move a bit more the cursor totally misses where you want it to go, also it takes multiple clicks of the touchpad buttons to for example click on a hyperlink on a website. This as you can imagine leads to a very frustrating experience when trying to carry out the simplest of tasks.

What are my rights for a refund from the store i purchased it from on the grounds that the laptop is not fit for purpose?

I understand it is a cheap laptop and I should not expect the best but I am coming from my 3 year old Lenovo G570 with buggered screen hinges and the touchpad still works wonderfully.

I'd appreciate any and all advice fellow ozbargainers have to give.

Cheers,

Jarrod

  • Try turning off mouse acceleration See if that helps.

  • Uninstall your Synaptic touchpad drivers first. Then

    Go to http://drivers.synaptics.com/Synaptics_v17_0_19_C_XP32_Vista…

Read the EULA and then click "I Agree" and submit.

    Install the generic Synaptics driver.

  • delete the driver and download the new ones from Asus.

  • the solution may be easy, i had a similar problem with an Acer laptop, mouse pointer was twitchy, go to control panel, hardware, mouse properties, under 'pointer options' click 'enhance pointer precision' box, fixed my problem

  • If you're still having issues take it to ASUS - they have the BEST warranty in the business. I remember I had a laptop with a few dead pixels - fixed! No questions asked.

Also had a new laptop recently where the dvd caddy was falling off. Asus fixed on the spot and gave back within 30mins.
