AGL Mega Month Deal 16% off and 1 Month of Electricity Free* [NSW]

40

just saw this deal published in todays Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph. Seems to be a good deal and from my previous research agl rates are quite competitive.

* NSW Special Offer: Offer not available to solar customers. You must switch from another retailer between 3 Feb and 28 Feb 2015 to be eligible. We will credit your electricity account for energy usage and supply charges for 31 days pro rata based on your first three months of electricity meter reads (including network estimates). Account fees and other charges may apply. Electricity offer not available to solar customers. Customers will receive a separate email or letter about the special 1 month's worth of electricity free offer and the 10 business day cooling off period will start when the communication is received.

I managed to get 22% but had to go through the whole rigmarole of trying to switch to origin and then suddenly AGL could offer me a better deal.

    • haha good one

    • hey bobby, which state are you in? How long ago. 22% sounds very good

NSW, just last month. My old deal expired I rang them to see if they could match Origin they couldn't so I switched and then they called me up and offered me 22% straight away.

        • Just wondering how they knew to call you back (if you know)? Was it triggered by the actual switching? Was thinking of skipping the first step and just start the switching process and hoping for a call…

        • @zzyss: It would have been as they need to re-read the meter to send you a final bill.

        • @SuiCid3:
          Cool, thanks!

        • +1

@zzyss: Actually they got a switch confirmation from Origin asking to switch my electricity at which point they then called me to try and persuade me not to switch.

    • Yeah I got the 22% too. Im in Victoria. Just call them up and wrangle them down.

  • Which paper is that? I just signed up to Origin, due to be connected tomorrow. Do you think I can switch during the cooling off period?

    • sure you can. that's what a cooling period is for

    • the offer might be for a southern state, which typical have higher discounts

ps: what offer did you finally end up with for origin?

      • 16% off but I want my $100 credit? Lol.

you also need to double check that the market rates which you are being offered 16% off, aren't higher than the standard regulated rates, ie, check 16% off what

        • @mattgal: Yea, thanks for the heads up. In QLD, electricity rates are regulated, so everyone charges the same for electricity. The 16% is off usage. I did find someone else that will give me 10% off total bill, but I worked it out in Excel that 16% off usage is better for me.

        • i don't think that statement is not correct. there are standard (regulated) tariffs set by the government and then there are market contracts with the discounts offered by electricity companies. the tariffs for market contracts can be higher than the regulated tariffs, so you really do need to double check, % off what. energy companies can be very sneaky.

        • @mattgal: I have known to be incorrect sometimes, apologies. I will double check with Origin again but pretty sure I got quoted the rates on their website over the phone, which is the same as every other provider I have looked at. Thanks again.

  • http://www.agl.com.au/residential/energy-plans/electricity-a… - I think OP means the megamonth promotion (but rather than $100 free credit, you get 1 month free electricity!)

  • which state is this for? and which newspaper?

  • +1

Ok, Used a bit of my Google-fu, and found these offers, but not useful for me.

    NSW: http://www.agl.com.au/campaigns/q2-bill/q2-bill-nswg 14% off plus $50 credit.
    VIC: http://www.agl.com.au/campaigns/q2-bill/q2-bill-vicg 26% off plus $100 credit.

Not sure about which state this applies to: http://www.welovesaturdays.com.au/ Free electricity on Saturdays for a year + first month free. If you assume that you use the same amount of electricity everyday, works out to about 14.28%, but I suspect that proportion will be higher since most working people are not home during the week.

    • any for queenslanders?

      • +1

Couldn't find any from AGL, hopefully cisco will be able to tell us which newspaper, since his/her profile says Location: QLD.

I couldn't edit my previous comment, I was going to add the free electricity offer on Sat is for Victorians with smart meters.

  • Does this apply to existing customers?

    • also, want to know… couldn't find any reference that mentions it is for new customers only.

  • I can't get any deal better than 10% of usage in QLD. Was on a plan with AGL where I get 15% off for a three year contract. This is no longer available.

Solar customers not eligible. (I'd expect most ozbargainers should have solar)

    • Guess Solar customers stuck with 8% and 10% discounts only

  • No link to the deal??? At least say what state its for Op

But these kinds of discounts are off (over inflated) usage charges, not their excessive service/connection charge.

So unless your running a growbouse, its probably not cheaper then the others

  • The Daily Telegraph, Sydney. Im assuming its a for NSW

  • I reckon they will just increase the price per kWh right after.

  • Just worked it out and found unless you bill is more than at least $400 a quarter then in NSW your likely better off in the long run with Red Energy where the 10% off the bill discount doesn't expire.

On a $400 bill the difference was:
with AGL $19.20 extra in higher rates
with AGL $7.20 extra as don't get 10% off supply fee
Total is $26.40 extra a month with AGL

Less 6% more off the usage of $330 = $19.80

Difference is $6.60 better off a quarter with Red Energy

Less 1 month free usage worth $110

Benefit = $83.60 over 12 months but if u don't renew and get at least $6.60 more discount a quarter or move right when your 12 months expires this will be lost in just a few months.

  • I'm in Qld and with DODO as they are the cheapest I can find

    Anyone find better?

      EDIT: 16% for NSW - http://www.energyaustralia.com.au/nswbbq?intcmp=ret|button|ea|homepagebbq||nsw

(Sorry, link uses the funky vertical bars, which I couldn't make play nice with the OzB editor.)

  • thanks just signed with them

  • And dont forget you get $150 off electricity if you are NSW resident and receiving family tax benefit A / B
    http://www.resourcesandenergy.nsw.gov.au/energy-consumers/fi…
