Need a Wireless AC Router

Hi all,

My current router seems to be dropping its wifi since I got a new iPhone so I'm looking at an AC router. Anyone have experience with the Netgear R7000? Or any other suggestions?

Personally have the R7000, but the stock firmware is a nightmare to navigate properly… flash it with DD WRT - Kong's edition and it should make it easier to use.

If you are unsure how to do that or do not want to void the warranty, get the Tp-Link Archer routers… Heard they are good but I personally don't like TP-Link anymore…

  • Think the archer d7 is $149 at msy atm, that's the one I bought from centrecom. Apparently that one is really good, I can't say much about it cause mine was DOA.

  • Thanks all! I was originally wanting the TP-LINK but I think only the C/D8 has beamforming. My current is a TP-Link but it's a much older model.

Anyone know if there is n R7000 emulator?

    • Anyone know if there is n R7000 emulator?

Hmmm, what do you mean? Never heard of something like that before…

      • An emulator of the UI. TP-Link do them for all of their routers so you can see how the UI is and have a look how intuitive it is.

  • I have D7 (with adsl), C7 is just the router. C8 is the one with beam forming but C9 is about to be released so maybe wait for that if you can.

I am very happy with the D7 so would buy TPlink again.

whirlpool forums might be a better help than here. Asus routers are meant to be great.

    • Just a quick question, I thought all AC routers have beamforming… isn't the C7 also an AC router?

Also, whilst ASUS is great for routers, they are quite expensive…

      • AFAIK all D series products are modem routers, and C series products are routers.

EDIT: I also have both D7 and C5 and both have been great.

      • I thought so too, thought it was part of AC but I see no mention of it in the D7 but they do with D8.
I have no idea as well whether it really makes a difference or if I would notice.

Compared to no beam forming, it makes a big difference in streaming.

Tested it after I got my r7000 with wireless n receiver on my pc and seems to have better streaming performance when compared to a n router. No stuttering whatsoever.

        • @ProjectZero:
That maybe just routers performance with N and AC though or performance of the antennas or different routers. Only real test is if you could turn beam forming on and off (no idea if you can).

        • @PVA:

Whilst I can't cross out the different antennas and router, I know it is still using wireless N as the WiFi receiver on my PC is N only.

I might rummage through the DD-WRT settings to see if there is a beam forming option that allows me to turn it on and off though.

        • @ProjectZero: Would be interested to see if this actually makes a difference or if Beamforming is just marketing fluff
