No Telstra Copper Line after Optus HFC Installation?

Hello all,
Just moved into a new house and troubles with my TPG ADSL abound.

There is an old foxtel/Telstra HFC connection AND an optus HFC connection. Both of these lead up onto the roof and over to the power lines. There is another Telstra copper cable that comes out of a little pipe in the ground and then into the house.

TPG say they can't hear a thing on that line. No dial tone, nothing. The optus HFC leads to a cable socket and there is also a centrally installed splitter with modem and phone sockets. I tried using that socket for the sake of trying but of course it did nt work.

Do you think that opt us might have gutted the Telstra copper cable lines when they installed their HFC connection?

Optus would use the copper wiring inside the house and would have connected that to their socket, assuming the Optus was most recent all your internal sockets are connected to Optus and you will need a tech to resplice the internal wiring to the primary Telstra /TPG socket.

    • Yeah thought so. It is one of the older optus sockets with the separate phone ports but still looks more recent than everything else. Thanks for your reply.

TPG offered to send a tech for free but I think that is just to take a look. Wonder whether I am better off just getting a cabling guy privately.

  • When you bunlde Optus cable & telephone, optus re-wire the telstra socket if they can and plug it unto the back of the cable modem (so they send telephony over their own cable & don't have to pay Telstra to use their copper.

How many phone sockets in the house?
I assume telstra/tpg have organised the ezchange to be connected? Are you getting a home phone & adsl, or naked?

One thing to do is grab a screwdriver, pop the phonee socket see if there's a second set of wires in there. Dont worry it won't bite. If there is, then that might be the telstra cable. Thats probably what theie tech would do & rewire it back. I'd take up their offer.

Can I ask why you're not considering Optus/Telstra cable (you're probably still in contract?).

    • Sorry, didnt notice this post.

Anyways, techie came around and sorted it all out. Optus cut the wire when they installed the HFC. He spliced it back again.

I can see why the previous tenant went with Optus cable. ADSL is an absolute dog out here. I think there might be RF interference from the neighbours. Probably the Samoans across the road with their bloody hurdy gurdy music ;-)

I will wait out the six months and toss up whether to get cable.
