Bargain Fishing Spinning Rod/Reel/Combo

Hi

totally a newbie to the sport so any recommendation would be much appreciated.

Read a bit on the subject and various reviews and seems like Shimano Sienna are the way to go but yet to decide.

Any tackle shop will do or just the local BCF?

thanks

What sort of fishing would you be doing?

    Husband is a keen fisherman.

He says Shimano is a good brand. Sienna is about mid range. Better off spending a little more money on something better such as a Symetre reel and a Raider or Pfleuger Trion rod to match.

That should last you 10 to 15 years and they are still considered a budget priced, but good quality product.

Most of the time, you get what you pay for when buying fishing reels and rods.

This is just his opinion. Others may not agree.

Wait for sales. Anaconda and BCF both stock these products and quite often they have a percentage off sale.

He prefers Shimano Stradic CI4 reel with a T Curve rod but you are looking at around $600 for that set up and it will last you forever.

    Have fun fishing.

PS Just saw advert of TV. Anaconda have 25% off all fishing gear, including Shimano, commencing tomorrow (Monday 2nd February)

I have both a shimano Stradic Ci4 & also the sienna and the stradic is a better reel it's not 5x better when it comes to price. The siennas are good little reel and if your on a budget then I would have no problem recommending one. Bcf quite often have combo's with sienna & sonic pro spin rod for $69 The rod isn't the best but for the price isn't too bad.

  • Great help
    Thank you so so much
Mainly at the beach or whenever I can tag along with the in laws' boat.
As much as I love fishing but unfortunately with two kids, Stradic is way out of my price range ATM

    Happy fishing …

    • You can get a good fishing combo for under $100 which will last you for years & catch plenty of fish. Forget about what "what" said in regards to the stradic they are just trying to big note what gear they have. You don't need to spend big bucks to get a good outfit.

      • We are not trying to big note what fishing gear we have and we apologise if you were offended by our comment.

        • all good, you both been great help

    • Probably may need to think a little mroe about the environments you will be fishing.

The rods for boat fishing and beach (surf) fishing will be quite different. The choice of rod & reel will also depend greatly on what type & size of fish you are targeting, whether you plan to use bait or lures, or whether you want to go spin/overhead/alvey/fly/anything else.

(I notice now this is a very old topic - my bad on the gravedig)

Have you thought about joining a fishing club. They arrange regular fishing trips. You don't have to go to them if you can't. Lots of experienced fishermen who can give you help on your fishing techniques. I like the idea of the club because you won't go fishing on your own, so if something happens, there are other members on the trip to assist.

    • What a great idea!!!!
Any in particular??? I'll have a look online.
      Cheers

I don't know of any in Sydney. We are in Melbourne.

Club members in my husbands club are very welcoming. I am sure that they will be the same in Sydney. Ones with boats do not want to fish on their own and sometimes need a member to join them.

I originally encouraged my husband to join because I did not like him fishing on his own.

He has been a member for over 20 years and has made a life long friend there.

Enjoy your fishing and good luck in finding a club in your area.

  • I would recommend the shimano catana 7ft spinning rod matched up with a shimano 2500 solstace spinning reel.$140.
