This is a mSATA SSD. You'll need a laptop, a NUC or a desktop motherboard which has a mSATA port in order to use it. Cheapest local price is $325 AUD according to staticice.com.au. However, this deal is nowhere near as good as the previous deal from Amazon earlier this year and the current USD to AUD conversion rate is worse than before. mSATA drives tend to cost more here and with less options to choose from compared to standard 2.5 inch SATA SSD drives.

  • You can also use one of these drives as a 2.5" via an adapter. Just make sure the adapter has a metal frame and isn't just a circuit board with nothing surrounding it.

    • what's wrong with those plain circuit board adapters? O:

why not a Samsung 840 EVO mSATA 500GB for $259 delivered on SE?

True. With the weak AUD, I have to think twice when seeing price in USD.

    • Also a good buy!

With 840 EVO, the software which supposedly fixed the read slowdown issue, does not appear to fix the issue. Samsung didn't explain what that software did exactly (other than it re-conditioned the drive). It also moves every existing data block to a new block. Problem is, the fix does not appear to work.

A workaround it is to defrag the SSD every few months. Not exactly a nice solution for a TLC SSD.

  • My Hp shipped with a 20gb of this type which has the recovery image stored on it from the factory.

Can any one tell me if these are the same or worst then the 3.5 inch SSD's.
since my motherboard has this connection i can upgrade the 20gb to this..

    • More information is needed. Like your Hp model number etc

    • you mean 2.5" ssd's? 3.5 aren't commonly available any more.
If your laptop has an MSATA port, then this is likely the only type of SSD you can use. a 2.5" SSD will use the standard SATA connector and likely won't physically fit in your laptop anyway.

You can clone your existing drive onto this using a USB to MSATA adapter.

      • It's a Desktop.

The msata is an Sandisk SDSA5DK-016G-1006.

i don't know why it shows up as 20gb.

        • Sorry, I assumed it was a laptop, there aren't that many desktop PCs that ship with MSATA. What's the HP model number of the desktop?

        • @thedriver:

          Envy 810.

@Pepsi to go: That's a cache disk for your hard drive. It should speed up the reading or writing of files from or to your HDD.
          It's a 16GB disk.

since my motherboard has this connection i can upgrade the 20gb to this..

Highly unlikely, judging by the tiny capacity OEM SSD included on the motherboard, that was intended exclusively included for Intel's Smart Response/Rapid Storage Technology where a small capacity SSD caches the most commonly accessed files giving these files a faster fetch time (overall system responsiveness is still not on par with a dedicated SSD boot drive and they disable a SATA port on the motherboard when in use).

The mobo's chipset most likely doesn't support using the mSATA for a boot drive as the mSATA lane is not on a bootable SATA port.

Just get a regular SATA SSD.

    M.2 / NGFF or bust.

    • well there's a huge glut of ex-Dell 128gb and 256gb m.2 ssds on Ebay … they're not the fastest (using SATA still) but having a few in RAID is good fun … I'm just holding out for the new PCI Plextor M6E (and M7E) to (hopefully) get a wider release so the older M6Es drop in price.

  • which one is good for a 2009 MacBook?

  • Is this the one in the macbook retina's?

  • I have an P8Z77-V DELUXE mother board.
    Can I use these drives?
