Is A Payment Made Into PayPal Able To Be Viewed Immediately?

Hello all.

I need to return a faulty product to a seller. The item was paid for using PayPal. The seller has advised that if he agrees to provide a refund, it will be paid back into the PayPal account.

I am wanting to return the item personally to ensure that it does not get lost in the mail. The seller is then going to transfer the refund to the PayPal account in front of me.

My question is. Will the PayPal holder see the credit as soon as the seller refunds it into their PayPal account, or does it take time to show up on the PayPal account.

It's usually instant, but there could be delays. I get an email from Paypal whenever a refund is processed.

It should be hassle free and like scrimshaw said you should get an email straight away.

  • Thanks. The refund is not for me. It was a Christmas present purchased for a family member (not by me), so the funds need to go into the purchaser's PayPal account. I will call the buyer once the transaction has taken place to ensure that the funds have actually gone through. I do not want to leave the goods with the seller unless the credit has taken place.

Such a pain when goods arrive broken.

it is not always instant for a refund sometimes it can take a few hours but if the seller was to send a payment for the same amount into the account it would be instant but if it was a large sum of money and seller had to withdraw from bank account through paypal it could come as a echeque and take 3-5 days to clear

    • That is annoying. May not be any use waiting with the seller for it to go through then.

I don't feel comfortable sending it in the mail because the seller may just say it was damaged in the post and not refund the money.

What to do, what to do.

  • it's instant last time i was paid with PP, gumtree laptop sold to a guy in Melbourne, his CBA account wouldn't allow payment with pay anyone so used PP, cleared as we were texting on the phone!

    • Sounds good. Hopefully it works this quickly for the credit that needs to be put in.

  • The only issue I can foresee is if the seller is potentially dodgy and you return by hand the seller doesn't have to refund as you will have no proof for return (usually postal receipt) for paypal refund, may want to get that in writing then

    • Yes. You are right. I have the same concern. That is why I was wanting to hand deliver the faulty goods and have the seller refund the funds immediately. I was then going to call the buyer to check that the credit had gone through. If there is no guarantee that the refund will be seen in the PayPal account as soon as the transaction is done, it is not worth me meeting the seller to hand deliver the goods.
