  • … and is an outdated model…

Yeah, by a week! ;) Considering the older and slower technology dressed as new models you'd find in the lower end of the PC market, this MacBook is still fantastic value.

      • not really by a week, this model has been around for quite some time. The new one costs $1229 on student discount, $90 more than this one.

Linking to the image is not very helpful.

    This link is http://www.buymac.com.au/product/apple-macbook-13-213-ghz-in…

According to their website the price has been reduced by $9

Not really a bargain as for $160 more ($90 more if you're a student), you'll get a faster, newer processor, bigger hard drive, and longer lasting battery. All in a whole new chassis and LED-backlit screen.

    Now that's a bargain.

    • The new unit you refer to has no Firewire and no user removable battery either.

      • Firewire 800 - neither will have
Firewire 400 - Yes, the newer model doesn't have it. How many Macbook users actually uses their FW400 interface?
Non-replacable battery - Will you ever be bothered to carry a spare battery and swap it out when you can have a battery that potentially lasts twice as long?

Boils down to what you really want (or need) anyway.
FW400, a little bit older, cheaper tech or no FW400 and a brand new product?

P/S: The newer model also has the big glass trackpad too. It's actually pretty good to use after a while.

PP/S: Also to note is that the newer Unibody Polycarbonate Macbook doesn't have an IR sensor for the remote too.

      • I doubt too many people would miss firewire to be honest with USB being so prolific. The fact the new models lack firewire is probably an indication of that too.

      • Yeah, I have a MacBook for 2 years now and I have not yet plugged anything into that firewire port thus far.

And as for the battery, I haven't removed it for about a year.

Considering what Oz_bargainer said in the reply, I think he has summed up quite well.

    • Agree, not a bargain as is the old model. New model can be bought for a little more with better specs.

  • If you cant get 10% off the brand new macbook your not trying hard enough.

1169 for new vs 1139 for old makes this not a bargain imo

    • if you can find this for less than $1139 inc. freight let us know :+)

      • no familiar with Mac prices, but even the lowest price is not sufficient to make it a bargain, though normally bargains are always the lowest prices.

      • Can I find it for less than $1,139 including freight? Yes I can (from a very quick Google search): http://www.maconline.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2…

There's nothing particularly special about this price; almost every Mac reseller I know, for Myer to JB Hi-Fi to NextByte and many more, currently have this model on clearance for a similar price point.

In fact, I'd have hoped for a bigger discount considering that the new model is not much more. I think there's a chance of getting this model for a further $100-200 off in the coming weeks, as resellers become a little more desperate to clear this old stock (NextByte, for instance, say they have 150 of them in stock).

        • No, what you cite http://www.maconline.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2… only includes Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard whereas the buymac.com.au includes Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard.

          • @holdenmg: Since maconline.com.au state they're an Apple Authorised Reseller, they may be including what is known as a 10.6 "drop-in" disc for free (worth contacting them about). If they don't, you can get Snow Leopard for $14.95 from Apple through their "up-to-date" program for recent Mac purchases: http://www.apple.com/au/macosx/uptodate/

So it still may be cheaper than the deal you posted, depending where in Australia you are.

My main point still holds: there's nothing particularly special about the deal you've posted. If you're happy with the price, though, then by all means go ahead and buy it! :)
