Best Way to Use My Qantas Frequent Flyer Points

Hi all,
Ok so I have nearly 200k QFF points. I am debating on the best way to use them. I am a bronze member and planning to fly to USA around august. Has anyone here used their points to upgrade to Business class and actually got it being a bronze member? I have heard it is next to impossible to get being a bronze member.
So that being the case, should I just stick with economy (I'm not too fazed) and use the points in the Qantas store?
Or use them for domestic flights?
I have also been looking into the 140k One World Explorer. Perhaps it would be best to save my points for that and go next year sometime? Has anyone done this?
Look forward to hearing your suggestions :)

I've used the One World Round the World Explorer fares - got to fly in business class from MEL-DXB-TXL-LHR-BOS-ORD-HKG-MEL for 280,000 points & $3,600 (fuel & tax surcharges).

It's by far the best bang for buck use of your points. A business class ticket equivalent would have set me back close to $25,000. If you don't mind flying economy, definetly use the the one world explorer fare. A simple MEL-LAX return fare is 96,000 points + $777 - whereas you can get 5 flights for only 40,000 points more (e.g: MEL-LAX-JFK-LHR-DXB-HKG-MEL).

Upgrading is very difficult for someone without a decent level of status on QF and even then it's not guaranteed - you also need to purchase a non-discount economy fare to go from economy to business.

Will the taxes be the same with a business class ticket to economy? I have seen economy RTW tickets advertised at travel agencies for around that price so it would kind of be a waste of points then.
I would be happy to purchase a non-discount economy fare for my trip from BNE-LAX but if there is no chance of getting bumped up then it would be a waste of extra money for nothing.

Hey, I cant seem to find the option to pay for the Oneworld RTW with QFF points?

Do I need to call up?

When I click RTW, it takes me to the oneworld explorer site which can only be booked using a credit card…

Or am I just meant to make a multi-city-booking, with the aid of the Oneworld RTW tool?

  • yeah buy some from ozb members (many got 40k points NAB), save up to 280k points~

  • you can use them on domestic flights in USA on 3 major airlines or USA to Canada (no fuel surcharges).

If you break the journey for more than 24 hours in eg. entry point such as LAX, you will have to pay USD$25/checked bag.

Plenty of cheap tickets OZ/LAX return for just over $1k in August, but you didn't say from what city BNE, SYD or MEL.

It can make a huge difference.

    • Oops yeah I will be leaving from BNE and going for about 8 weeks. Thanks for the info about using it on flights in USA I didn't know that. I assume it's just the one world airlines I can choose from?

      • yes you can use on Alaska Air, American & US Airways (latter 2 undergoing a mega merger at present) in USA & USA to Canada.

Just had a quick look & there are still fares BNE/LAX/BNE if travel 17-31 Aug for around $1060 return including all taxes/charges + incredibly low upgrade costs at check in.

Contact us directly if you want more info.

We don't sell these fares anymore as literally only $30 commission.
