  • Yeah, I've been using the 2TB ones for a few years now with no problems. I'm mega paranoid though, hearing all the bad reports

Anybody know the best reliability but still a decent price?

  • +1

I have had 2 die on me last year. I use it in my nas and even raid5 couldn't save me.

  • picked up 1 at kogarah post office in nsw. no displays, had to ask at the counter.

  • +1

WoW, $33 for 1TB!! Great bargain indeed!

  • +2

Just to chip in regarding some saying stay away from ALL 3TB drives, I have had 3TB WD Red drives in my NAS for over 2 years with movies, backups, etc and still going strong. Kids streaming movies virtually non-stop main usage. Maybe bc they are designed for 24/7 operation.

    • +1

The article I linked was more the point that the Seagate failure rate was 40%+ - not any other brands

I'll wait for a bargain on 4TB. Bound to come up sooner or later despite the AUD. Aussie retailers don't seem to manage their stock levels very well.

    • ?

    • I would suggest later. $150 was the cheapest for 4TB in the past few months,
with the AUD dropping so far. Now you are lucky to see the good side of $180 …

      Now, some math…

      180 / 4 = $45 per TB
      99 / 3 = $33 per TB

4TB drives would have to be less than $132 to beat this 'bargain'

I say 'bargain' as $99 was exactly what I paid for my other two 3TB drives…..over TWO years ago….

Good luck finding them mthmuch less than $130

  • no stock on Franklin Street MEL CBD, has anyone checked in the city yet?

  • thanks OP bought 2 (st leonards NSW) if anyone want some, they should have about 10 left. I asked them to check the stock before hand…

  • +1

Plenty in canberra city that big shopping centre place / bunda street.

  • Still happy with my 5TB Seagate from Officeworks (Price matched Amazon) $173 local stock :)

    • How could OW price match Amazon?

      • They just did it.. http://imgur.com/FBshcuf

        • Browns plains! that's not too far from my place.. Will try my luck…

        • @Ahan:

Let us know how you went!

        • @syousef: I have run through the process. Firstly and the most difficult part is find someone who hasn't heard of Amazon. A girl maybe? Show her the web page it would say $*** free delivery for order over $25. She will the just go price match.. Haha

        • @Ahan: You gotta show them a page from amazon (Current) The deal on the 5tb hdd has gone up on amazon now, so you wouldn't be able to get it for that price

      • By getting lucky. My friend has done it before as well. But don't count on them doing it much!

    • Receipt?

  • I guess these are cheap when taken out of their enclosures as you can easily put them back in if RMA required.

    • Maybe if you had a stash of 'VOID IF REMOVED" stickers that are used to cover the screw holes.

      • +1

Mine had no stickers. But I lost one of the internal rubber mounts so I can't RMA my failed drive. Sigh.

      • In Australia it doesn't void the warranty.

It's like with third party ink cartridges…

It's in a thread on whirlpool. Either way, the older seagate external don't have a sticker unless it is inside the drive, in which case we are only taking it out of the enclosure and not dismantling the drive.

Had 3 x 3tb (ST3000DM001) seagates running for about 4 years now, no complaints here.

    • hahaha this has to be the most positive comment I've seen so far… :)

  • I have bought one in Mascot NSW Postoffice yesterday (manufactuing date jan2013), thankyou for posting this bargain!

  • Looks like a good sale to go with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/181032

Just when you need a powered storage device for a gaming console, OzBargain doesn't disappoint!

For those new to putting 3TB+ external drives into your PC the firmware in the case (not the drive) translates the drive to allow them to still be formatted MBR and even if you change them to GPT while in the case there is still translation going on so when you put them in your PC you have no choice but to wipe the drive and change to GPT, so don't start using the drive before you put it into your PC, plus to properly change to GPT in your PC I recommend EASEUS partition software free for personal use, I hope this has been useful for people new to this

most acronyms ever. i got a headache reading this post.

      • Should have preempted that from the username.

  • Available at both LPO and franchised?

    • Rang 8 LPOs in my area - no joy.

so this 3TB have a failure rate of 43.1% correct?

    Whirlpool Thread: forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2342172

    • I experienced a 100% failure rate.

With my sample of one. :)

      • what happened? DOA?

        • I used the bare drive in my desktop. It worked for a few months, then started clicking. Seatools returned an error code. But I lost one rubber bumper so couldn't RMA it.

        • @eug:

          Thanks for letting me know.

Best if i stay clear from this drive then =]

        • @Rakddon: Well my sample size was only one… I'm sure there are plenty of other people who have no problems with theirs.

I've personally sworn off Seagate for a season now though. I also have a 4TB Seagate which I left in its external case and it makes occasional whining noises now. Grr.

    • +1

The users in that thread clearly state the 43% failure rate in the source article is laughable & nothing close to correct. The unit has less than a 1% failure rate from the only actual empirical data collected in mass sales of the unit from national retailers.

      • In July last year, Amazon suspended sales of the Seagate Barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001 drive for a while, which is the same drive used in their external enclosures.

The reason they gave was "customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here."

Maybe they were getting a higher-than-normal rate of returns?

        • -1

Yep, and then they resumed sales of the unit immediately because they realised there was nothing wrong with it & that people had been duped into believing others who kep re-posting the same false reports of the unit having a laughable 40% plus failure rate.

        • @infinite:

Yep, and then they resumed sales of the unit immediately because they realised there was nothing wrong with it & that people had been duped into believing others

          Is that opinion or fact?

who kep re-posting the same false reports of the unit having a laughable 40% plus failure rate.

What if the failure rate wasn't 40%, but double or triple the rate of other drives?
That would still be a low number, but still a lot higher.

        • @eug:

The 40% plus number was never proven to be true. It was purely opinion & no evidence of it was ever provided. Further to that, a failure rate of even a quarter of that figure would have required by law that the units be removed from sale due to being faulty. Then on top of that, retailers would have stopped selling it if there were return or fault issues with it, especially the big one's. But none of that happened, because there was never an actual issue with the unit.

        • @infinite: Again, proof?

          Here's some for you though - Newegg reviews, from actual customers;
          http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148844&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction--na--na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10487648&PID=1800524&SID=

31% of people gave it 1 egg, the lowest rating. Go read through the comments - almost all of the 1 egg reviews are "dead drive". How can you be so against the facts?

        • @infinite:

The 40% plus number was never proven to be true. It was purely opinion & no evidence of it was ever provided.

Hmm? That was fact, reported by backblaze, supported by their stats.

Of course just because their usage scenario experienced a 40% failure rate doesn't mean everyone else will. But the fact remains that they did experience a high failure rate, along with a huge number of people on forums all over the net.

I think the point is that multiple brands and models were tested in the same scenario and the other brands and models had substantially lower failure rates. That includes the 4TB Seagate drive. So why would you pick the "weaker" drive?

  • Has anyone found any around Reservoir in Melbourne, I tried Northland Post Office Shop to no avail there are a ton on LPO's around here but I assume they are a waste of time, will try Reservoir Post Office (spring street) Monday maybe even Epping, but unable to ring official Post Office Shops directly as only get the generic 13 number which was useless, If anyone has found any this end of Melbourne that still has any I am willing to travel to the CBD and surrounds if worthwhile, I have a MYKI card and I am not afraid to use it. Am visiting Reservoir from Sydney and need some affordable (CHEAP) storage to take back with me, Thank You

    • Avoid North West and Hills District.

    Guys!!! DON'T GET IT!!!!
WHY? because 3GB seagate HDD has the BIGGEST FAIL RATE!!!

      • why?
I'm trying to help you guys, it's not hoax

        • I was deleting my own post.

The fail rate doesn't apply to every one, in my company, we have more WD fail rate than Seagate on SOE Desktop same batch die around the same time, Samsung and Toshiba are similar too. Seagate seems pretty good in SAS drives but as you look thru the "Report" it's mostly consumer drives on enterprise usage.

    • Lol.

    • +1

The information provided in that link has been proven to be laughably false. The unit has a failure rate of less than 1% from any actual data gathered on it.

  • My lucky day, just so happens l had to post something today at my local PO and spotted a 3TB seagate in the cabinet. Scanned at $99. Last one. Cheers OP. (Even the woman behind the counter commented on the cheap price).

  • Went to AusPost in Burnside Village SA to mail stuff, and asked if they had it on stock. I was questioned about the price of $99, but once scanned, bingo! Thanks OP!
