  • How big is the data file that i assume downloads after u install the apk?

Never played the game on tablet but this game is an absolute classic. Would recommend it to anyone, but it does require a longer attention span than your average tablet game.

    • Would you recommend people play the first game in the series before playing this?

      • +5

Hmm. The second is better in almost every way but playing the first will give you some familiarity with the game's systems rather than throwing you in at the deep end (you start BG1 as level 1, BG2 as a level 8).

They are long games though - expect about 70 hours for BG1 and about 150 for BG2.

        • +5

Thanks. I've always wanted to give this a go. I'll let you know what i think of them in the two years it will take me to complete these!

        • +4

          @Freddo_Melb:

I would skip 1. I played through 2 first and 1 was never great in comparison. If you really want to take two years then play one first :P

        • @spillmill:

Same… played 2 with Throne of Bhaal, tried to play 1 and it wasn't as appealing. Same thing happened when playing Diablo 2 first then trying to go back to #1

      • +2

I'd recommend skipping the first. BG2 is indeed better in every way and by skipping BG1 you won't get burnt out on that kind of game before moving onto the good stuff. Low level combat is stupid anyway, with things like mages being nearly useless and all of your characters being weak enough to be one-shotted by a random (un)lucky crit.

      • +2

I recommend getting 1 & 2 ( the original non hd games, mod it using the putting the engine from bg 2 into bg 1 and the mod that basically stitches the two games into an extra long one.

Find a pc, an old laptop would do. Tun off your phone and connections to the outside world and write off the weekend with it.

        • +3

also.. buy an old viewsonic 19" crt 4:3 for full effect :)

      • Appreciate the input. I reckon i'll start with the original, even if it does take me forever.

Some people have things like skydiving, traveling the world on their bucket lists. I have things like tv shows and computer games! I'll hopefully get through all the list one day!

        • It's worth being aware when you start BG1 that as a level 1 your battles are going to be quite random - you'll have about 6 hit points and it can be just a roll of the dice whether you die or your opponent does. Don't get too disheartened, and don't be afraid to run away! It gets much more sensible when you hit level 2/3.

BG1 is still a great game - many of my fondest memories from the series come from it - but just because BG1 was Bioware's first RPG there can be a couple of rough edges.

        • @batiudrami:
Really enjoying it so far - but yes, i'm dying and having to load saved games quite a few times.

This is one of my fav games of all time.
I can smell my old sharehouse just thinking about it..
    the wicked lan parties..
taking my pc to work so I could play when the boss left..
    good times.

i would be interested to hear whether some young genY could get the same experience from it.
I kinda think you had to be there.

    • +3

As a gen y-er, I can tell you yes, indeed we can.
Back in high school, a group of friends and I would have a good old LAN every couple of months - usually involving such classics as Battlefield 1942, Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast, SOLDAT, Quake 3 arena, Diablo 2 (same poo different smell)and Doom 3 with the co-op mod and flashlight mod.
Unfortunately the smells I reminisce were the gross old stale cigarrette smell that would exude from one of the guys PC's since he came from a smoking household. Not so pleasant on the nose. That and the steamy sweat smell all being crammed into a small room,

Best one was probably at my parents house, set up in the down stairs part of your typical 70's highset house (not actually livable or pleasant downstairs). All the walls were just fibro board crap that you could basically look outside through the gaps at joins. A slight breeze would cause all sorts of creaking and rattling. So we decided it was a great idea to go all lights off for some doom 3 action. Talk about atmosphere.

In other news though, I got some pretty fond memories of Baulders Gate: Dark Alliance 2 on PS2. It was a pretty damn good game. Though, tablet/phone is the absolute last system I'd choose to play such a game on.

  • Should I get this Android version or the classic PC version on GOG?
I guess the advantage of the Android version is that I can play it on public transport as I have no time to play it on my PC at home for 50+ hours.

If only Baldur's Gate 1 was on sale too.

    • +3

Unless you really want to play on tablet I'd get it on PC. You can get the enhanced edition (rather than the original version) on PC also - keep an eye out for a sale to get it for about a fiver.

The extra content from the enhanced edition is rubbish, but a lot of mods and fan patches are built in so you get a better "out of the box" experience.

This is one of the best games of all time but needs some patience to get into. You dont need to play the first, I finished no.2 then played no.1 and couldn't bring myself to finish it, it was nowhere near as good as no.2

  • The controls on the tablet isn't as good as PC.

Didnt think they lived up to the hype TBH. Yes I've played them both through with the BGtutu mod.

Planescape torment, however, was amazing. Despite the older engine having some archaic game mechanics, the story was so good it didnt matter.

I played Planescape Torment only a couple years ago (it was released in 1999), and while it shows it's age in terms of graphics in terms of storytelling and writing it's better than nearly any modern day game out there. It's an amazing game, I found the baldurs gate / icewind dale series too boring in terms of plot and character dialogue/banter, however torment has none of those problems, and hooked me in after I played for a short while. I agree that the game mechanics are a little bad, but you can get around most of the battles anyway by careful dialogue choices.

Great game. I wonder if you can add a keyboard and mouse and see if it will work?
Fond memories playing diablo I, II, LoD and BG.

I remember my overpowered Kansai/Mage build shield up then wreck with celestial fury, throwing spells

Then I was powerful enough to kill off the mage guards in town when they try to capture me

After that they don't come out any more

    • +1

Ha! It really is overpowered, I remember completing this game twice then reading about that build, created my character as it and god mode was enabled.

      • Haha yeah first time round I got smashed everything by those guards so sick of it. Then I aimed to make a build following some guides for revenge

  • This is the gold standard for what gaming should be, I've sunk more hours into this game than I can count. The only thing to check is that this is a straight port of the original, not the HD version (which is available for PC), that thing has 400+ documented (and often game ending) bugs.

Ah Yoshimo…. you son of a….

  • Half the experience for me was realising how much current MMOs have borrowed so heavily from these games, I found it quite amazing and very interesting.

As a Gen X'er I'm disappointed that I missed out on these games back in the day, talking crap on MIRC and playing Counter Strike was my thing back then making up for lost time now.

    • +1

Those were the days counterstrike LAN parties, Rogue Spear @ Internet Cafes. ICQ, MIRC. Altavista not Google

      • Oh yes, nothing quite like organising matches to the sound effects "EH OH" over ICQ.. !

        • +1

ICQ was a pre-requisite to joining my guild in Ultima Online…. ahhhhh good times.

This is the ultimate RPG. Has still not been eclipsed despite almost 15 years having passed.

They advertised Dragon Age: Origins as having as much engrossing content as this game.

    They lied.

Excuse me, think I need to go and romance a certain slutty drow cleric for the 10th time….
