yeah, they changed their loose change menu :(
the double beef and cheese burger for 2 bucks was awesome :(

  • To be fair, $1 was just the loose change menu price for a while, but that price ended a few months ago now i'm pretty sure. On a similar note, I noticed today that it now costs 60cents to upgrade S-M and M-L, instead of 50cents.

They actually have got rid of the loose change menu when franchise owners complained that the existence of the low-price options were killing sales of pricier, more profitable options. Times magazine article here

Another thing that franchise owners probably hate if they ran Dominos was the $5 pizzas. After considering staff, utility bills and cost of ingredients, the profit margin would be pretty bad especially on Cheap Tuesdays.

Maccas is getting far too overpriced for what it is.

agreed, odd that their prices went up considering the price of oil is falling, and they use so much of it.

mm okay, i must have meant that literally, it's far easier to insult people rather than try and comprehend the joke in its form.

          good job

        • Wouldn't be a joke in china. I would not be surprised if they somehow managed to fabricate edible stuff out of crude oil.

@Son ofa Zombie: still doesn't give you the right to insult people

sincere apology to you, and all my sensitive millennial friends.

Let me put it this way… the same way Castrol once said… "Oils ain't Oils"

McDonald's has not offered any value at all for a while. The loose change menu items were OK for a while if you needed a quick lunch, and drive thru was convenient. But honestly with the meal prices now i'd rather get something else e.g. Subway or go to a restaurant/pub for a lunch special. It costs about the same and the food is better! Considering that the burgers are tiny, and postmix coke and potato costs only a few cents there is really no justification for the prices. No wonder they are doing poorly in Australia.

Agree. A breakie meal is over $7 now. And their mcflurry ice cream thing are getting close to $5 - for soft serve!!!
Crazy prices for poor quality take away.

Aussies need to stop buying Maccas, they're simply playing us with the prices. Do what Japan does and avoid it or to not eat there by default, they've been rewarded with 540yen (~$5.90) medium Big Mac meals and ~$1 apple pies for years. Once they start seeing their fat profits drop, they will play nice.

On another note, I felt insulted by the new Maccas app that was next to useless other than to order online (WTF?). Japan's app has in-built coupons/discounts that rotate every week with genuine specials.

    • Mos Burger apparently outranks Mc'Ds in Japan. http://en.rocketnews24.com/2014/03/20/survey-ranks-japans-mo…

      • "with survey respondents saying the consistent taste and low price kept them coming back."

Unfortunately this is not the case with Maccas here. And the one neg I got proves that Aussies will never get this satisfaction. So sad.

        • Many things are cheaper in Japan actually, due to differences in PPP and the Big Mac index. If you lived in Japan but earned an Aussie wage, you could definitely eat and live like a king.
Unfortunately Japanese wages are lower than ours.

          @scrimshaw:

May have misinterpreted what I've been saying. A Big Mac meal isn't much cheaper there compared to here. But Maccas over there have been pressured to keep prices low due to high competition and actual dropping patronage numbers. Like I said they have a permanent coupon/discount app and are motivated to keep discounts on the Big Mac. In contrast, any small discounts here is like a miracle (see recent OzB posts on Maccas).

        • Yeah, they certainly have a much bigger variety there when it comes to fast food.
Also, because Japan is geographically much smaller (high pop. density) means all the fast food places and hawker joints are all congregated in the cities, so competition is likely fierce.

As opposed to Australia where they are more evenly spread out over a wide area. And they have less competition (Subway, Hungry Jacks and Oporto, neither of these three have that many branches)

So you'd expect their prices to be fairly low (and food quality to be pretty crappy as well — I can't imagine their burger patties to taste quite the same as the ones we have here).

        • @scrimshaw:

Not sure on overall quality, but Beef patties are from Australia and fries are from the US.

        • when I worked in Hibiya (central Tokyo -if there was one) the closest McDonalds closed down and was replaced by Mos Burger.

      • Not to mention the bad press they got. Expired chicken, plastics, human tooth?
They lost alot of public trust.

      • Mos Burger is the bomb in Japan and Taiwan. But we have better local burger here in oz.

        • yes, like MOS burger.

          in Queensland.

  • Maccas fries are my favourite. :(:(:(

    • You can make your own - The reason they are not allowed to call them "Chips" in places where that is the common term has nothing to do with American vs. U.K English. When they first opened in India, an Indian Health Dept employee did a little digging, and found the fries were dried potato blended with beef dripping then dipped in sugar solution to provide the crispy coating when cooked.

This pressed a few buttons, not only in a nation that had risen up when it was rumoured bullets supplies to them were treated with pig and beef fat, objectionable to the two major religions, but to all the Hippies who had bout them for years because of the large " cooked in 100% vegetable oil" signs in a brilliant example of mid-20th century greenwashing.

McDonalds took quick and urgent action - they immediately launched a world-wide "Tastes of the World" campaign with the first cuisine being [surprise surprise] India. It had the desired affect of displacing a weakly formed association regarding "some really funny thing with Indian religious feelings" to "Wow, theirs a new McDonald burger and it's cheap".

But yes, they are nice. That's because chips should really be cooked in beef dripping. Grapeseed or Safflower oil is brilliant for fish, patties or anything you want quick and crunchy. Canola oil is a f***ing tragedy :-/

  • The beef bacon loose change is $3 and there's still chicken mayo for $2.
But the chocolate waffle cone for $1 (variety of 3 toppings) is a good deal (although unhealthy)

  • I liked the frequent buyer cards they had, small big mac meal for $5 any time, it was valid for a year, my son and I had one so it was a treat on weekends when we were out shopping, and I did a few lunches mid week.

But at full price …… a big mac meal is expensive …… lunch now is the subway $5 deal, sub and coke for $5.

Now he prefers the $4.95 Pizza hut and Domino pizzas since he has done the maths, just as close as Maccas to us.

Unless macaques bring the value back, I don't eat there anymore on weekends, $5 gets more at dominos and pizza hut.
