$100 Worth of Fruit & Veg or 20,000 Flybuys Points for Medibank Customers (Requires Activity Tracker)

630

First time posting a slightly complicated "bargain", please feel free to comment, alter as required.

You will need to have a Flybuys account, be a Medibank, own an approved activity tracker (see T&Cs), and commit to 10,000+ steps every day in March 2015 in order to receive $100 of voucher from Coles Group.

Might not be a bargain for everyone, but perfect for the ones who has the above.

Saw this and thought it was a bit of a deal as 20,000 points = $100 which you could spend on anything (not just fruit) and could offset the cost of the activity tracker (if you don't have one) or be a bonus if you do already. But note - it's a bit of work to legitimatley do 10,000 steps every day for a month! I know, i did it in November (Move your Mo-vember) and 1, it's interesting to see how little steps you might normally do if just an office job, and 2, that it takes a bit of effort to get to 10,000 every day. If you want the $100, you gotta commit to it - which i guess is good!

    • +3

just shake the thing 10,000 times :P

      • +2

depends if you can handle the guilt! And know that actually doing it is good for you!

        • +1

You're talking to ozbargainers, someone will do a comparison of $100 and how long you need to keep an activity tracker in a mixer to make it count 10000 steps.

        • It's actually not that difficult to reach 10000 steps each day. Just walk around the block a few times and do some household activities and you'll be set. Even walking around the house helps.

      • +3

If you are macgyver, you could hook your activity tracker up to a string and turn it into a Pendulum!

For people who are curious, 10,000 steps equates to around 8km in distance.

        • If you are macgyver, you could hook your activity tracker up to a string and turn it into a Pendulum!

I'd just duct tape the activity tracker to the side of your car's wheel… drive to work, drive home again, voila, daily goal reached.

        • @scrimshaw: No, for your kind information it doesn't work once you move it over a certain speed which a human can walk or run it doesn't count the steps plus it also detects some how movement speed and how far you moved.

Did the test with Fan but it counted absolutely 0 but if you hold it in hand and keep shaking then it does counts.

So i guess here needs to come with another hack, probably should hook up with timely slow moving moter or something else.

        • LEL. Or you could hook it up to one of those paint tin shakers and get it done in 30 seconds :p

    • -1

Really, according to healthkit, I am already on around 15,000 a day average without even trying.

      • +4

I suspect one of the reasons Medibank is asking for an "approved activity tracker" is that many of them are wildly inaccurate.

Particuarly phones which aren't designed to do this kind of measurements accurately.

  • +2

This will be good encouragement for those who've taken advantage of the McDonald's free fries/coked with Big Mac offer (which conveniently ends March 3 lol)

    • Or the cheap KFC boxes!

  • -1

Do I need to be on a specific plan for Medibank (like the cheapest possible plan etc.)? Sorry I did not read through the T&C…. that makes too complicated…

  • +2

Give with one hand, take more with the other http://m.smh.com.au/business/health-insurance-premiums-to-su…

    • +3

Agreed. I think private health insurance is a scam and add little to health care system efficiency. O well, it still works out to be better against the medicare levies for not having private health insurance.

All the above said. $100 (if I do actually get it) is better than nothing.

    • +1

Agreed. The price rises in private health insurance just approved by the government will probably result in much bigger cost increases than the $100 gained.

  • Does shaking it 10,000 times work? Is it like a pedometer lol

    • Yes it does and you right its more towards pedometer, except with a memory of 30 days and links to a echo system where it feeds pedometer and calculates distance and you can manually feed other daily activities like food, water and sleep.

    • Does shaking it 10,000 times work? Is it like a pedometer lol

Just tie it to your dog's or cat's collar.

  • Can anyone work out how to add the activity tracker, I get to the page:

"You're only steps away from collecting more points, link now!

Medibank members can collect 10 points for every day thay make 10,000 steps using a linked Fitbit Wireless Activity Tracker. If you're not a linked member, click here to link your accounts."

but there's no place to link it?

    • Was trying to figure that out too, because in the linking page, it will only allow you to choose the brand… but no mention of linking to the activity tracker account?

maybe it's browser cache based or software installed on the PC/phone?

    • I have the same problem… there isn't actually a button or something to link the tracker on the Flybuys page. I've contacted Flybuys via Twitter but they are yet to give me a solution.

    • when I got to that page - I just clicked onto the type of tracker that I had (fitbit) then you get a page that says - link me (or similar) you then have to type in your Medibank membership number and voila - done.

  • +1

I've been doing power walks a few times per week, using LG G3 to track steps via LG health app, I need to do about 7.5km per day in order to achieve this (I average 9200-9500 steps depends on the route I take). Just to give some out there an idea what it would take.

    • hmm

  • good deal

  • Presumably - well actually this was specifically mentioned in the recent documentary film Citizenfour :) - this will allow Medibank Private a very intimate look into your life with your consent:

Having a customers credit card number to cross reference against other data from other data brokers (assumed due to the flybuys account linking the customer identity to the credit card number) and location (assumed due to the activity monitor) allows for a large amount of assumptions that are right "often enough" to be useful to be made.

Add groceries and medical conditions to the above data I suppose for a more complete picture.

    • Depending which activity tracker you're using. As an example, the Fitbit One doesn't integrate with the maps or GPS function of your mobile device - therefore they can't track your location. However, they can track your location where you shop (via your FlyBuys activity).

  • Can someone copy/paste a list of approved devices? The website doesn't allow me to see the list unless I already have a flybuys account. I only have a Nike Fuelband.

    • +1

It appears you will need one of the following types of devices:- Fitbit Wireless Activity Tracker, Garmin VivoFit, Polar Loop or Jawbone UP at flybuys.com.au/linkdevice. These devices will sync to the associated web site for the device which will then pass the count results on to flybuys/medibank.

      • Thanks heaps!

(I note the same list was in the original post, but thought it perhaps wasn't exhaustive)

  • +2

I walk 5.5 - 6ks ever morning and another 2-3 each evening. Plus what I do during the day. I don't own one but if someone has a device, is with Medibank, lives near me and wants to ensure they get enough steps each day, I am happy to do the steps for you. Just not sure of the logistics of it all.

  • +2

This is not easy to do, from experience. You will need to consciously do some exercise or if you commute by walking to work, then even better.

I would just put the activity tracker on my dog if you're running short on steps.

    • +2

Sounds like a fine idea to me - don't forget to share at least $50 worth of dog food with your dog :D

    • Or a younger brother, sister, niece, nephew… the list goes on… haha

  • Any good deals on activity trackers?

  • If you're always wearing the tracker, it shouldn't be too hard to get to 10,000 steps each day. I've been wearing mine (fitbit) since Boxing day and have only missed the 10,000 goal twice. A good deal if you meet the criteria - unfortunately I'm not a Medibank member.

  • +2

Attach the tracker to the dog?

  • If only they reward you with 100 eneloops

  • I'm thinking I could do with the incentive to exercise. I'm sure that I saw some of these exercise trackers last time I was at Costco - think it was the garmin ones. Does anyone know which model they stock and how the price stacks up?

    • Get the Fitbit Zip and you'll profit about $33, if you're buying from Harvey Norman pick-up.

Get a higher end model, and you could end up breaking even or losing money. If you're with Medibank, you also earn 10 points for each day you reach the 10,000 step goal.

  • Did anyone manage to successfully link their fitbit to flybuys or Medibank?

    • Yep. I'm earning points already.

  • Has anyone else had this offer get thrown in the "Expired" area? It was active for me until Tuesday, now its appearing expired for some reason…

    • -1

It's expired because March has begun and you can no longer sign up for it

  • I signed up for this challenge but can't seem to confirm on any of my accounts (medibank, flybuys or fitbit) that im actually participating!! Does anyone know if there is a way to confirm I actually registered for the challange??

    • +1

yes. i am registered and received an email from flybuys with a subject Ready, set, go… you're on your way to $100 worth of rewards

      • Does it show up as an activated offer in your Flybuys account??

  • What a bad luck for me. Have reach at least 10000 steps since the Begining of this challange and today my fitbit just gave itself up and no longercharging. I feel disappointedby this. Well looks like i wont be able to get the $100 for the hardware failure
Now time to contact fitbit support to get it fixed or replaced under warranty

    • That sucks! My Fitbit Flex battery is no longer holding charge. I'm lucky to get 8 hours as opposed to the 5 days Fitbit says it should last. BTW, I only bought it last month!

I've done 10,000 steps since 19 February. Hopefully the battery doesn't get any worse before the challenge ends.

    • +1

This is precisely the issue with devices that have a proprietary lithium ion battery that is sealed in.

      Guaranteed obsolescence.

This is why I got the Fitbit Zip, which has a removable CR2025 cell.

  • +2

Aaaaaand she's all over. Now to sit back and wait for the points to roll in!

  • I did my 10k steps every day up until the 30th. 15 minutes past midnight I woke up and looked at my phone to see my fitbit widget staring back at me saying 9300 steps. Such disappointment. Such rage. Until I tricked it. I changed the timezone and kept on walking.

So when do we get our reward?

    • +2

Well the T&Cs state you must sync your tracker once every 7 days. which means participants have until the 7th to upload their steps from the 31st. After which data is compiled and they send the offer out to eligible customers. So I reckon we'd be looking at the 8th (Tuesday) at the very earliest.

  • I've had 10 FlyBuy points credited to my account for each day of March, but no notification in terms of the event yet..

    • You should have gotten 2 emails:

      • One at the start saying something like ready set go.

      • the second saying that your half way (if you managed to make it)

I have gotten all my points for every day of March, but no bonus points yet.

      • Hmmmm, not sure if they've been deleted.. I know for sure I got the ready set go email, but I can no longer find it..

        • For future reference, don't delete emails.

You never know when they could come in handy - e.g., in this case if they 'forget' to give you points.

        • @happychappy1: yep, definitely keeping that in mind!

I think outlook doesn't help because it automatically decides what is deleted unless I intervene ><

    • +2

Just called Flybuys, told me the email asking if you want the $100 off or 20,000 points will be sent out today and will take 24-hours to process once you pick an option.

      • I was told it could also be tomorrow when they send the emails out.

        • Yeah, I got nothing Yesterday… Anyone got the email?

        • @megamilinda:
Ok, just logged into the Flybuys account online and the options were in the "Offers" TAB - as per the conversation I had, the points should be available with in 24 hour.

  • +1

Buggers me why anyone would choose the $100 off F&V option. The 20K points is far more flexible

    • +1

Yep. But maybe they want to be 'healthy' by buying overpriced Fruits and Veg.

      • yep but you can buy that with the 20K flybuys points anyway! plus anything else that Coles sell! (or target, 1st choice, kmart etc). Absolutely no benefit to choosing the F&V

        • +1

I would definitely take the 20,000 points.

Someone with lack of personal control might take the fruits and vegetables - to make sure they do spend it on that.

Who knows.. people mostly aren't rational.

  • +2

Just got notice of my 20,000 flybuys / F&V reward choice being available. Logged into flybuys and it looks like a simple choice. 20,000 flybuys for me! :D

    • Me too!

Curious to know how many steps everyone clocked up last month! It tells you in the email.

    460,772 steps here

    • +2

      380,130 steps

    • +1

      455,398 steps…very happy with that!
I think it was a really good promotion….I enjoyed it a lot :)

  • Anyone have their points allocated yet? Mine is still showing as activated in the Offers tab :S

    • Just be patient. Bonus points can take up to 30 days to appear in your account.

  • Guys I just rang Flybuys, and the guy said over the phone that if you had not been receiving any daily email updates of your progress then your account might not have been linked properly to this promotion.

For everyone else who are/did get the emails, then the release date for points is 27th April.

To remedy this, you need to email them proof from your activity tracking account, by way of screenshots proving that you got 10000 steps each day (so if there is no summary for March, then you need to take a screenshot of every day in March). Plus all the regular things like Account #, name etc etc.

Yes, even though in your Flybuys history you can see everyday you've earned 10 points, they still need you to email them this proof. I thought this was a bit stupid, as this is clear proof that I achieved the daily requirements … how else am I going to get FitBit-FlyBuys 10 points added to my account everyday without doing 10000 steps?? Somehow hack my Flybuys account?!

    Annoying!

    [email protected]

    • I only got a mid-month progress update and then an email early this month saying I'd successfully completed the challenge. The 20K points arrived in my account today. Daily updates sounds a bit full on, I'd wager the guy was talking out of his ass.

  • +1

    Got my points this morning…yippee!

  • +2

Got my 40,000 two days ago. To all, great effort!
Bought two new Fitbit charge HR for $230 on Gumtree.
After March sold one of them for $100.
After getting $200 worth, I pocketed a Fitbit charge HR and $70 dollars. Not bad
