Super A-Mart: $799 (Was $1999) for 9 Piece Teak Outdoor Setting

170

I've been looking for an outdoor teak setting for a while now and came across one in the most unassuming store -AMart!
The cheapest teak table i've across is ~$800 for just the table, chairs are in the vicinity of $100 each.

Anyway here's one teak setting from A-Mart which comes with 8 chairs, usually $1,999 now down to $799
Constructed of FSC certified teak from 100% well-managed forests
Individually the table is $899
Chairs are usually $159each

i find that hard to believe.

It's true, teak sets are quite expensive, the 11 piece setting is selling at normal price $2499.

      • Infact i tried getting them to sell me the 2600 long table(which is $260 extra) and keep the 8 chairs as part of the deal for $1150, the cheapest they could do was $1650.

  • I am actually looking at buying an outdoor set, and this fits the bill, but the question is, how are Super A-mart furnitures in general? Are they flimsy? Do they last? I know Fantastic Furniture is crap. How is it against IKEA?

    • I've bought a buffet and coffee table from them and I'm pleased to say I'm impressed with the quality. Both solid heavy timber items are well made imho.

Compared to Ikea its 100% better

    • Average quality, I bought the silverwood collection which had numerous problems throughout all the furniture. If your into high quality I would definately shop elsewhere

    • sKIZZIT, not all furniture at AMart is good, but i can vouch for this setting. I just assembled the chairs yesterday, they are actually better than the ones i got from Schots years ago.

I think this a great deal and even gave it a +

But i had the same setup - and the chairs are very uncomfortable. both on ya bum and on ya back

previous to this we had a $400 4 seat from Furniture n More Similar to this
    http://www.furniturenmore.com.au/outdoor

and the chairs were more molded for comfort- without cushions

    • Is it easy to put cushions on them?

      • Yes it is -
        1. adds to cost
        2. we did not bring in cushions(Undercover) every time so when it rained they also got wet
        3. we have dogs they though the cushions were also comfy - dog hair

  • @Skizzit: We bought a three piece timer deck set some time ago, Nullabor Collection it was a part of. It was floor stock that was heavily marked down. It's been totally fine, I've oiled it once or twice and puttied up some cracks in the time it has sat out there. I'd buy it again.

Buyer beware. Teak varies in quality. FSC certification has no relevance to the quality of the wood.

    Teak Grades
Teak wood is available in three different quality grades which play the key role in outdoor performance and durability of the furniture. It is therefore highly important to know what is the difference between teak grades and how to distinguish between the highest quality teak and inferior timber.

    Grade A Teak
Grade A teak is the highest quality teak wood. It refers to timber that is taken from the very centre of the log (heartwood) of a fully mature tree. Grade A teak can be recognised by a uniform, golden brown colour, close grains and glossy surface that feels oily to touch. It is high in teak natural oils which play the key role in teak outstanding resistance to outdoor elements by protecting it from unfavourable weather elements and repelling insects. Unfortunately, it makes up only about a fifth to one quarter of the log and as a result, it has a high price.

    Grade B Teak
Grade B teak refers to timber from the outer heartwood section, making up about one fourth to one third of the log. In comparison to grade A teak, grade B teak has a lighter colour, uneven grain and less shine. It contains only traces of teak natural oils and as a result, it is unable to withstand the exposure to the outdoor extremes without protective treatments. But even then, it doesn’t last even close as long as furniture made from the highest quality teak.

    Grade C Teak
Grade C teak is an inferior quality teak wood. It refers to timber from the outer sections of a mature log (sapwood) and logs of immature trees. Grade C teak contains virtually no teak natural protective oils, has a very uneven colour and is easily damaged because it is very soft. Furniture that is made from grade C teak is even considered unsuitable for indoor use due to its softness that makes it highly susceptible to damage. Although it is taken from the very same tree species, grade C teak has no similarity to the highest quality teak neither in regard to outdoor performance, beauty or durability. Grade C teak garden furniture is relatively inexpensive but it has a very short lifespan even if it is treated with protective coating or periodically oiled.

    • gevidian, thanks for the info, i did read about this somewhere too, but (apart from time) is there any way to be able to distinguish A-Grade from C-Grade teak?
