2007 Mitsubish Lancer - Clutch Replacement Price?

Just out of interest, can anyone tell me what sort of price we should be paying to have a clutch and pressure plate replaced in this? Hubby is thinking it's likely to cost around $1400, which just seems nuts to me.

Obviously the plan is to call around and get some quotes. I just don't want to have to pick myself up off the floor from shock too many times, so figured I'd go in forewarned. lol

Last time I got a clutch replaced, it was around $750 on a laser… Not exactly the same, but a FWD car's engine bay can be quite packed requiring the removal of lots of stuff. I've known guys to do their own RWD cars in an afternoon without help - by comparison.

But the good thing is that it should be easy for mechanics to quote up

Depends if you are going to a dealer or just mechanic. I got a Subaru Impreza clutch for $800 and got it fitted for $220 last year. I assume if you go dealer (for warranty) it would be 20-30% more?

Doesn't Mitsubishi have a 10 year mechanical warranty?
Does replacing a clutch after 8 years seems a bit unusual?

Clutch is a consumable item, like brakes.

    • Does replacing a clutch after 8 years seems a bit unusual?

It has averaged 30 000km in each of those years.

      • No not at all.
So are you saying the car has now done 240,000 km?
It heavily depends on how the car is driven. But clutches should last at least up to 100,000 km if it's driven responsibly.

        • So are you saying the car has now done 240,000 km?

          Yep, close to it.

        • @Geewhizz: So you're saying you've done that many KMs and this is the first time the car has had its clutches replaced?

        • @ps90:

Yes. It has been fine until now, but is showing signs of needing to be done.

Between 800 to 1000 mark including parts, machining the fly wheel and labour in a garage. Or take it to a mate who actually knows about cars… drain fluid, take clutch out, take flywheel to mechanic to machine it, put new clutch in, new fluid, bleed and done.

My advice would be to take it to a mechanic.

    • Hubby is capable of doing it. He just doesn't want to if he can help it.

I wouldn't blame him. There are some jobs even though I am capable and have the tools to do, it's too much of a headache to do it. I would take the car to a mechanic, leave it for a day and get it done.

See if you pick up the Exedy clutch kit by yourself from Repco/Supercheap/Bursons it costs you any less or not. You can get the part number by going to Exedy's website. Don't go for the Heavy Duty clutches, just go for normal ones.
