Do You Have NBN? What Do You Think of It?

Hi everone!

I have recently signed up to the Telstra NBN and Foxtel package (entertainment package only)!
I have never used NBN before, and never had Foxtel.

For the people who have used NBN, what do you think of it??? Is it that much better than ADSL2+ and Cable?? Do you notice the difference at all??

And for Foxtel with iQ? i get 200GB per month, I know everyones usage is different, but If you are a casual user, does iQ consume alot of data?
I probably sound like a noob here since I've never had neither before.

I've come from adsl at top speed of 1MB/s and now I'm downloading at around 10x the speed of that. It's great for downloading large items from Steam and PSN but for website browsing its mostly the same for me.

I don't use Telstra but if you got Foxtel through them wouldn't the data be free?

    • Thanks for the feedback. Im aware just watching foxtel wont consume any data, just keep hearing i may need it for some reason. You can tell im gonna give myself a crash course on this stuff soon

      • I have Telstra currently with Tbox and it is -unmetered- download so it doesn't use the included plan (unless you are capped) when you are capped the Tbox is also slowed.

        • As I am getting the 200GB plan im hoping thats enough for me, taking that with ADSL2+ i never use for than 100, unless NBN is super fast that I end up using more than normal.

I had Telstra ADSL 2+ in the past and Internode NBN now. The difference is like night and day. With ADSL 2+, I didn't get any where close to the advertised speed because of congestion in the Suburb that I was staying. With Internode NBN, I signed up for the 50/20 package and I got exactly this speed.

With a package, I think the Foxtel data doesn't count in your usage limit. Anyway 200GB is a lot and if you don't download stuff, you will have ample balance at the end of each period.

  • no idea, in brisbane and still stuck on dial up

I'm in Nth Bris and have found Auspost faster for data delivery.

      - and not live to 150

Why do we always get (profanity) who want to politicise every enquiry on NBN. Go back to Whingepool

        • meh have a look at ozbargain forums, full of weird off topic, new created members posting asking weird stuff

          just joining the trolls!

        • @djones145: Fair enough, so you just got called like some others been - lucky you :):)

The only one I can agree on is the last one… don't plan to live past 50 ;P

Also, you two have it wrong… Tony dumb dumb is just a puppet… the real people hindering progress is the people in the other seats of power. In this case, it would be turnbulls***.

Would you guys be able to try speedtest.net by any chance? Cheers.

    • +8

Yeap, I use Speedtest frequently. Current results are:-

      Ping 2ms
      Download 47.44Mbps
      Upload 18.78 Mbps

My internode NBN plan is 50 download/20 upload.

I am getting NBN estimated date from NBNco letter is the 16th of February -> 12th of March. I will be getting the $90/month 100mb/s download and 40mb/s upload — unlimited plan from Exetel, and might respond back on this thread when I get it. But I am looking very foward to the experience. (So stoked that I got FttP instead of FttN)

  • +2

    I have 100/40 from Exetel.

    Speedtest 89.94 Down/37.56 Up

Generally I don't have issues however I do experience Youtube buffering every once in a while which I didn't with Exetel ADSL2. The only thing I can do that I couldn't with my ADSL2 is backing up everything to the cloud. In any case, its not an option for me as my suburb removed all copper connections.

    • The only thing I can do that I couldn't with my ADSL2 is backing up everything to the cloud

      I'm glad someone said it.

Honestly there are plenty of people like me who would like to have uber fast internet but don't really need it. It's not something the taxpayer should be footing such a massive bill for.

Political rant over, now when is it coming to my suburb? :-)

NBN is the future. Everyone should abandon DSL/Cable if given the choice.

    • +3

Wrong. NBN was the future, now it is the stopgap until the original NBN is deployed. Taking twice as long and costing 3x? 4x? 5x? 6x? as much as doing it once.

All the clowns that voted liberal in, we would have the NBN everywhere already instead of waiting for these crappy gradual rollouts

    • Whilst I agree with that, I also have to point out that we would also have a government that is fighting amongst itself.

    • +4

Like you I think these guys are clowns, but don't get too carried away with promises made and reality.

I got my NBN 6 months after they were elected. So nothing they said or could do would change that. But at the previous election we were promised it would only be 6 months before we got the NBN. It turned out 3 years later. (Labor)

The reality is Australia is a big place, and its not going to be as easy as Singapore to roll out the NBN unless we are all prepared to pay big bucks for this to occur (we are ozbargainers so we don't like paying!!).

My installation was an example of the realities of installation. It took a team of 5 guy's 5 days to install the underground cable. And in my area that turned out to be the norm for many installations. Plus another team of 2 guy's has since returned to repack the trench that got washed away because it wasn't repacked properly the first time.

Its not just a simple run a bit of optical cable and voila you are connected. For something designed on the back of a napkin as a vote winner, with a poorly thought out budget the NBN guy's have done a magnificent job on getting to where they are even now.

      • I spoke to a contractor involved with the NBN (friend of a friend) over a couple of beers. He was telling me that he and his co-workers (and everyone he knew working on it) are taking as long as possible to do the work. They have long contracts with a ton of work. I think this has a lot to do with the time and cost blow-outs.

    • I also do not get why they are building old FttN, which would cost more per annum while the NBN will cost more to install but be a little more future proof than old copper cables from a node.

    Cant compare the 2
    Chalk and cheese
I had adsl and now have NBN
    Flying bro
Comes at a small price though

    • Good to hear! Did you notice your download usage go through the roof?? Like when People switch from 3G to 4G on their mobile phones?

  • +1

    Not at all.
    I use approx. 10gb a month.
    Getting 50gb
    Cant finish this at all.
Getting NBN and line for $69-95 iprimus

  • +1

Not much difference if you only browse. I had 17mbps when I was on ADSL2+, and now 93mbps on TPG FTTB… no difference for browsing BUT big difference when downloading stuff, especially big files.
Also the higher speed now allows me to stream 4K video on Youtube without buffering.

Though the main reason I switched was the upload, ADSL's 1mbps was way too slow, now I get 38mbps and uploading pictures is finally a reality.
