My friend recently bought a MacBook Pro online. Since it is 2015, is it weird that the Mac he received is the "mid 2012" model? Even though the specs are the most recent, does this affect anything in case he wants to sell it a few years later? Can we request Apple to give us 2015 models if we order it in 2015? Thoughts?
Bought MacBook Pro Online Recently, but Was Given The "Mid 2012" Model
Comments
There were three "Mid 2012" MBP's
Model Identifier, MacBookPro9,2 Model Number A1278 - 13in
Model Identifier, MacBookPro9,1 Model Number A1286 - 15in
Model Identifier, MacBookPro10,1 Model Number A1398 - 15inand seven different MBP's since to the present day.
As the post above observes there is no 2015 released MBP.
Did your friend buy from Apple.com.au or the Apple Online Store?
Did they buy New or Refurb?
How much did they pay, who did they buy from and how was it described?
Always a good idea to take a screenshot of the actual online advt when buying online. :+)
It was a new unit bought from the Apple Education Store for $1229. There's no description as which year the model was, but there is only 1 model for "macbook pro" all the other ones were "macbook pro with retina display".
The one with retina display is the 2014 model on the Apple website.(although the 2013 macbook pro has a retina display) https://www.apple.com/au/macbook-pro/specs-retina/
Not sure why they don't make it clear.

Not if he selected the 2012 model.

Specs wouldn't be the latest since it is a 2012 model. It would be worth less than a 2014 model, and have less features, not as powerful.

Not unless you selected the 2014 model. There is no 2015 model yet.
You could try and return it http://store.apple.com/au/help/returns_refund
The 13" Macbook Pro hasn't been updated since 2012. It was very good in 2012 and 2013, but if I was buying today, I'd get a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro with Retina Display - the more modern processors have better battery life and graphics capabilities, and the SSDs are blazingly fast.
On the other hand the 2012 model is one of few Apples which allow you to upgrade the RAM (up to 16MB) and the hard drive (throw in an SSD for a massive instant performance improvement) so it does have some advantages. So if it meets his needs now, he could be a happy user in 3 or 4 years time too.
If your friend is unsure about it (or not entirely happy about it), remind him about the 14 days full money back guarantee Apple provide. Within 14 days, if you are not entirely happy about the warranty, you can return it and get your money back.
I was unhappy about the smart cover I bought from Apple for my iPad. When I asked for a full refund within 14 days, the staff was very friendly. He did not even ask me why I wanted to return it. One of the great things about Apple.
My friend recently returned an iPhone 6 Plus purchased online (his mother does not want it). He got a full refund (he did contact a store to get some assistance before hand).
Yup, Apple's customer service is the best. One time my MacBook Pro had a dead pixel, show it to them, they replaced the display unit, no questions asked.

Like said, it hasn't been update since 2012. He got a current model, the current model just hasn't been update for 2 years. Odd, I thought it had a refresh last year, must of only been the retina.
Apple products hold their value rather well, selling it later on won't be impacted to heavily by this.
AFAIK, the Macbook Pro has 2 versions on sale. One of them is an older device, whilst the other is newer and has retina display. I think the older device's last iteration was in Mid 2012 (dont quote me on this) and this doesn't mean it was built in Mid 2012, it's just the model. So you wont have any luck getting a 2015 model as there aren't any 2015 MacBooks available right now.
