USB LCD Monitor - YES or NO ?

Sorry for asking basic questions at first place, just trying to clarify my doubts here…

I am planning to buy a Monitor size 21 – 23" to use for office work from home
(no gaming features needed), just to avoid any chronic pain – so Im having below doubts …

Since this monitor will be ON for around 8-10hours, it may consume electricity and may contribute slightly to my electricity bill, so should I go with the USB monitor if I have to save $ on electricity? But doing quick search on web it shows the same size USB monitor are quiet expensive compared to non-USB ones :(

On side note, any good bargain for Monitor 21-21.5"?

  • USB is for the video signal through a special driver.
It still uses the same amount of power from the wall.

If you're going to be using it that much, splurge on an IPS screen.

LED backlit screens wont cost you a noticable amount.

    • I think OP was talking about actual USB powered monitors… i read some in the past… maybe 2-3 years ago…

  • thanks :)

any good bargain for IPS screen Monitor 21-21.5"

  • From other online materials (eg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPS_panel), IPS consumes more power? Read the disadvantages bit in link.

I reckon a USB monitor would use much less power. USB ports can only output about 5w, so monitors would need to be built within that power budget. Standard wall plug monitors would use about 10-20w. But the price difference between the types of monitors would probably mean you'd never save enough with a USB monitor to make the savings.

LOL, negged for logical reasoning. Thanks OzB community!

  • IPS uses marginally more power. But as pointed out, 20w @ 12vDC, is 1W at 240v (well, a little more for inefficiency).

I understand the concern about money, but the best advice I was ever given was this:
You actually only use 3 parts of your computer.
    Keyboard, Monitor, Mouse.
Get the best of these three, and save elsewhere.

I took that advice, never been happier.

IPS is the sort of screen an ipad has, where it looks good on every angle.
TN (the other type) is what most TV's are made from, where it darkens or washes out on certain off angles.

While you're right, there are USB powered monitors, I can't see one thats as big as the OP wants, plus the extra cost, plus the inability to use it if the Operating System fails at any point….. Nope, dont float my boat.

  • Buy a 26-32" TV and use it as a monitor. You can then claim 50% off your tax and the power usage yearly.
