Mobile Broadband and Background Processes

Hi all, I have an annoying issue with my mobile broadband usage. I have a mobile wifi hotspot and I connect my (Android) phone and (Android) tablet to it to get internet connection. Occasionally my laptop uses it to when I am working on the laptop while out of the house.

I set my Android phone and tablet to do background processes that uses big data to be done only in Wifi mode, for example app updates. But of course the devices don't know when it is connected to the Internet through Wifi using mobile data. Big chunk of my mobile data got chewed up for this.

Is there anyway to set it up so that it does all background updates only when I connect to home wifi? Thanks.

  • I don't think there is a way to selectively choose which wifi to download updates from and which not to. Probably easier just to have "Auto Update on Wifi" turned off and then start the updates manually when you're connected to your preferred wifi.

  • I do this as well. I think I'll stop it now.

On New Years Day my Nexus 7 (2013) did 0.98GB of background data in the Google Play Services whilst connected to my phones hotspot. I got a 50% usage notification from Vaya on the 5th, I assumed it was delayed from December.

I've now got 9 days to go where I haven't used mobile internet on my phone, because I went up to about 97% usage.

Not sure of any way to set up hotspots so they aren't counted as WiFi networks for updates.

  • There is a way!

At least in lollipop there is. On my Nexus 6 if I go

Data usage > (three dots options thingo) > Network Restrictions > [turn on for your hotspot]

    Ta daaa!

  • Unfortunately I might not get Lollipop with my current devices.

I was thinking that IFTTT might have a recipe for this? Anyone have come across?

    • I'd assume there is a similar process in KitKat?
